[A wonderful pAsuram]

The one who has performed grand deeds in other

avathArams – is all this Lord of Thirukkudanthai who

is reclining. Oh Lord! The One who has most beautiful

black curly long tresses! [kEsanE]!

On the banks of the river Cauveri- which flows

crossing the large mountain hurdles, forest and

deserted areas on the way, breaking down as large

number of canals and flow continuously- You have

chosen to recline in Thirukkudanthai in such a grand

beautiful and divine posture. Is it due to the

exertion of your tender soft red lotus feet taking a

walk from Ayodhya upto mythilA (before marriage) and

AyOdhyA to lankA later? Have they pained for you to

take rest? OR is the whole ThirumEni (divine body-

dhiyva mangaLa vigraham) endured during Your Varaaha

avathAram killing HiraNyAkshan and brining back BhUmi

PiraaTTi (Universe) back from troubled waters? Please

bless me with an answer as to why You have reclined

and may Your such divine Yoga nithrA (reclining) long

live for aeons! [vaazhi]

Nadantha kaalgaL- the legs that walked- may also refer

to Thrivikrama avathAram- scholars say. Where He has

walked, this may be referring to that avathAram.

Not just the lotus feet that exerted; It is the whole

ThirumEni that exerted in Huge Boar avathAram; The

thorns and stones hurt the feet while walking; It is

the whole Universe- with all its mountains, oceans,

rivers and forests- how mush pain that would have

caused on His sowkumArya ThirumEni (tender Divine

Body)!

Yezhundhirundhu pEsu- Get up and speak- If You attempt

to speak while lying down, I may feel more concerned

and worse that Your pain is so much that You are not

able to even get up. Hence please dispel my worries

and get up to speak to me. If you do that, at least I

will feel that the pain has subsided and I feel good.

ArAamudhan just like Sri RanganAthan was reclining

fully at Thirukkudanthai andd when AzhwAr had prayed

for getting up to speak, He broke His archA samAdhi

and started to rise. AzhwAr being overwhelmed by His

dayA, mercy and solwbhyam heeding to his own request,

enjoyed the divine Beauty of His ThirumEni sings

mangaLAsAsanam “long live your reclining posture”

[vaazhi… ]. Hence even today, Amudhan blesses us with

the reclining posture with a slightly raised position

as if He is getting up [udhyOga sayanam]- as mentioned

by scholars.

Sri UttamUr Swamy adds: OR it may also be possible

that Amudhan was reclining in the slightly raised

posture even before. When AzhwAr request Him to get up

to talk to him, Amudhan heeding to Asrithar’s

[greatest devotee’s] plea, attempts to get up. AzhwAr

feeling overwhelmed with His sowlabhyam, request Him

not to get up and says, “vaazhi” singing

mangalaasaasanam for His udhyOga sayanam.

OR yezhundhirundhu kidandhavaaRu- Having seen the Lord

reclined as if he is getting up, AzhwAr asks as to

why are You not getting up? “Becaause of the exertion,

I am not able to get up any further”- the Lord

responds, and hence AzhwAr sings vaazhi- may You live

long for aeons to come in this position! – can be

another anubhavam – Says Sri UttamUr Swamy.

The Lord breaks his archA samAdhi and speaks to

AzhwArs at all dhivya Desams and hence this is not

uncommon. Here probably He did not speak immediately

and hence AzhwAr asks as to why You do not talk? Is it

because Your legs pain? Your body aches? Etc.. Readers

may refer to 20th verse where also AzhwAr requests the

Lord to tell as to why You stooped down so low holding

the manthara mountain on Your top for the sake of all

those Devas who claim themselves to be demi gods?

kEsanE- it not only refers to long haired PerumAL. It

may also be interpreted as KesavanE.. kesavaa! kESaath

vO(S)nyatharasyAth.

Ka – BrahmA’s antharyaami (in the indweller inside

Chathurmukha brahmA)

Isa- the indweller inside Rudran.

Thus He is the Supreme Lord- above all and He is oppAr

mikkAr illAdha maamaayan. (unparalleled and

unsurpassed, Peerless Lord)
