Guest guest
'engaL mAdhavanEA' In the preceding posting we witnessed AzhwAr surrendering at the feet of Lord of namisAraNyam in the sannidhi of pirAtti. It is well known that swAmi nam-AzhwAr performed a comprehensive and total surrender at the divine feet of thiruvEnkatamudaiyAn who is none other than the Lord of pirAtti. this is seen distintctly from the pAsuram-agala killEan -thiru-voi-mozhi 6-10; Akin to this thirumangai mannan surrenders at the feet of Lord thiru-vEnkatamudaiyAn in the ninth thiru-mozhi of the first ten. In each and every pAsuram he expresses 'vandhadaindhEan adiyEanai At koNdaruLEA' . sri periyavAchAn piLLai's commentary is excellent in this regard having scanned the mind of sri thirumangai mannan. "..ennudai pApangaLaip pArthAl, abandhukkaLai bandhukkaLAga ninaithum,bhOgyam illAdha idathEa bhOgya budhhiyaip paNNiyum,Artha vishayangaLil 'aiyO!'ennAdhEayum, vunnaiyozhiya puRambEa kAlathaik kazhithum pOndhEan, ... ippOdhu dhEvarai ozhiya sellAmaiyOdEa vandhEan, ithalai shEshamAi, dhEvar shEshiyAi,vida voNNAdha sambandhamuNdAi, en kuRRangaLai poRuppikkaikku pirAtti sannidhiyum vuNdAna pinbu, en abarAdhangaLai poRuthaRuLi...peirya pirAttiyAr purushakAramAga thiruvadigaLilEa charaNam pugugiRAr" AzhwAr sees his deeds. He had mistook as relatives who are not so. He has mistook as happiness which were not so. He has not evinced emotional interest in the real matters. He has spent time in things distancing himself from the Lord. However, now he approaches the thiru-vEankatamudiayAn. AzhwAr being the shEshan- the subservient soul, Lord being the shEashi-the Lord of the soul, the pirAtti being the mediatrix to make the Lord to condone the misdeeds, AzhwAr surrenders comprehesively at the feet of Lord thiru-vEnkatamudaiyan with pirAtti's purushakAram. This is clear from the words "engAL mAdhavanEa" in the penultimate pAsuram of this thirumozhi "maRREal onRaRiyEan mAyanEa, engaL mAdhavanEa". ii. Another question is raised by the commentator in this regard. Having already surrendered in naimisAraNyam why should kaliyan surrender again here? Those who take great concern and care of their gentle physique will repeatedly sprinkle and splash water on their countenance to ward off tiredness and fulfill their quench. Similarly, AzhwAr's state of emotions push him to do this surrender act repeatedly.
