Guest guest
SAGGING BY THE WEIGHT It is said that ancient civilisations can be gauged and understood from sculptures, excavations, history and sacred works. History is replete with sculputures of mAmallapuram. There are also references regarding commerce and trade and imports. thirumazhisai AzhwAr however mentions that these sacred psalms hold the message eternally- yAnum andhAdhi mEalittu aRivithEan Azh poruLai.. Accordingly, the economy of mAmallapuram is easily understood from thriumangai AzhwAr's pAsuram in thriu-mozhi on mAmalla puram. The ships sail into mamallapuram carrying valuable gems, tusks, elephants. The vision of this is so attractive that the mind desires for these. The ships do not just carry these but are filled with these and slowly sail as the weight makes the ship move hither and thither. Such is the wealth of forign trade of mamallapuram, thorugh its once famous sea port. Even today the light house stands testimony of the busy and active vessels in and out of the port. The pAsuram: "pulam-koL nidhikkuvaiOdu puzaik-kaimmA kaLiRRinamum, nalam koL nava-maNikkuvaiyum , sumandhu engum nAnRu-osindhu, kalangaL iyangum mallai............." 2-6-6; The term "sumandhengum nAnRu osindhu" indicates sagging of the ships by the weight of these valuable articles. vanamamalai padmanabhan
