Guest guest
Dear srivaishNava perunthagaiyeer, Just I was reading a collection of sriman sadagopan iyengar swamin's earlier articles.[which I made in my computer as two files]. In one article he has written "what is in a name?" and concludes 'as suggested by periyaazhvaar name your / the children with the supreme lord naaraayaNan's names'. That is the best way to look at on this 'nameology craze' present nowadays. I am just putting across the same topic 'what is in the name?' If the name is 'uttered properly' or called properly it may lead to create a war. Perhaps if I say that you may not agree so easily. You will ask 'hey how uttering a simple name can create a war. Hey what do you say? Is it true?' etc. Will you believe it? If you don't, then read on. This is the verse taken from same periyaazhvaar's thirumozhi, [which our dear sadagopan swamy also used in his write up] wherein aazhvaar asks to name children as kesavan naaraayaNan maadhavan et al. 'maiththunanmaar kaadhaliyai mayir mudippiththu avargaLaiyaE mannar aakki uththarai than siRuvanaiyum uyyak koNda uyiraaLan uRaiyum kOil baththargaLum bagavargaLum pazhamozhivaai munivargaLum parandha naadum sidhdhargaLum thozhudhu iRainjath thisai viLakkai niRkinRa thiruvarangamE' 4-9-6 periyaazhvaar thirumozhi. meaning of this paasuram as given by sriman maadhavak kannan of Singapore is "The spouse of Paandava kings? Draupadi? she had taken a vow to tie her tresses only after the death of DuryOdhanan and Kauravas; and the Lord made her tie her hair by (arranging for) destruction of Kauravas completely in the battle field and made his cousins- Paandavas (aunt's sons) as kings and later in order to let their lineage rule, He saved Abhimanyu's son in Utthara's womb. Such most merciful lord - Parama dhayaaLu - Parama krupALu - SarvEshwaran resides here for ever in Sri rangam where Bhakti yOgis, Prapannas, Sages, Siddhars et al prostrate from afar; go near His lotus feet coming nearer, where the Lord's divya mangaLa vigraham glows with the lamps lit beautifully in the sanctum sanctorum". [Re: message no. 17838 of June 2003 of bhakthi list archives]. Dear bhakthaas, Now you will ask "1. what is the connection with the name calling and start of mahaa bhaaratha war? 2.Where is the clue in this paasuram that a name has lead to the war? For that we will have to see the commentary of periyavaachchaan pillai jeeyar. "ivaL sankalpaththinpadiyE kaaryam seidhu koduththu ivaL kuzhal mudiththavanRiRE naam saraNaagatha rakshakan ennum pEr padaippadhu enRiRE krishNan thiruvuLLam irundhadhu. Thoodhu pOnadhum, saaradhyam paNNiRRum, parama rahasyamaana prapaththiyai upadhEsiththadhum ellaam idhukkaagaviRE" - [pages 517 518 519 of year 1909 publication of moolam by periyavaachchan pillai jeeyar available in million books section of www.archives.org <http://www.archives.org> you can search by author in P or by language tamil and then go to the title]. Meaning or a rough translation of above sentence - sri Krishna was thinking - how to obtain the name 'saraNaagatha rakshakan' for me? - For that perhaps first make droupathy tie her tresses. No, that may not be so easy - for she has taken a wow that - unless these kouravaas who just pulled me into the sabha mantapam and undressed me are all living, I am not going to tie my hair - unless I apply as oil their blood from the bodies, I will not tie my hair. krishNa continues his thinking - To fulfill her vow these kouravaas have to die. - For that a war between these kouravaas and paaNdavaas have to start, not only that all these kouravaas have to die. - When she has her vow fulfilled then only I will get that name saraNaagatha rakshakan. Then what is the course? To start the war. Based on this thinking, krishNa started functioning: - as a first step - went as an ambassador, then as a second step as a charioteer to the great warrior arjuna, then taught that arjuna the super secret of prapaththi in the war field. But why all this thinking to krishNa - for she called "gOvindhaa, puNdareekaakshaa, rakshamaam saraNaagatham" when she was being disrobed by these kouravaas. Even though krishNa supplied enough clothes at that time from a far away place as dhvaarakai and thus saved her from ignominy of being disrobed in an assembly of elders and respected, he feels it is not enough. [incidentally i remember here a casual saying on this saree episode as - aththinaththukkum ottai kaikkum nadakudhu pudavai vyaapaaram - i do not remember who said this etc - aththinam is hasthinaapuram - ottaik kai is dhvaara kai ] For she called him gOvindhaa. Also said rakshamaam charaNaagatham. He, that krishNa, gOvindha, feels only a portion is fulfilled and not full dues for that calling of his name. So he has to initiate the war. Now perhaps you realize a simple act of calling the lord's name creates a war, may be not at that time itself but as a consequence after some time. If he is going to do all this for a simple name calling, why not we do it sincerely, more sincerely, - please join me in singing "gOvindha govindha hare muraare" Dhasan Vasudevan m.g. Guest guest
Dear Sri Srinivasan, Please try the website www.archive.org - there was an extra "s" (archives) in the original post. By the way, it is not Periyavacchan Pillai 'Jeeyar'. It is only Sri Periyavacchan Pillai. The vyakhyAna chakravarthi did not ascend to any matAthipati post. However, the text is archived under Periyavacchan Pillai Periya Jeeyar, as Swami Manavala Mamunigal (Periya Jeeyar) completed the missing portion of Periyavacchan Pillai's vyakhyanam for Periyazhvar Thirumozhi - which is part of these books. adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan --- Srinivasan Narayanan <malaseen wrote: > SrI: > > Dear Swamin: > > Vignapanam > > As usual Sriman Vasudevan's posting is marvelous.
