Dearest Srivaishnavas,

Alavandhaar enjoys describing the four divine strong

shoulders of the Lord separately here:

chakaasatham jyaa kina karkasaih subhai:

chathurbhi raajaanu vilambibhir bhujai:

priyaavathamsOthpala karNabhUshaNa

slathaalakaa bandha vimardha samsibhih: [33]

[The Lord who has] four most auspicious long limbs

[arms] that extend right upto knees; that has the

scars of the bow string that keep touching the wrists

and the shoulders; that which grants auspiciousness to

His devotees; that which denote the contacts of His

divine consorts [srI Devi; bhUdEvi; nILdEvi] imprints

the marks of their bangles while they hug Him with

their hands; the marks of their ear studs; the marks

of curls of their black tresses; etc..

During avathArams, the Lord uses the bow and the

wrists show the mark of scars due to the continual

usage of pulling the bow chord to fight and aim

arrows. But in Paravaasudeva roopam, where is the case

of such marks and where is the time as He is sitting

on AdhisEshan most of the time? [When Alavandhar

enjoys RanganAthan- which is the #1- Divya Desam- the

Primary Moorthy, different kind of marks appear to

Alavandhar; PiraaTTi lies down with Him on the divine

bed of AdhisEshan.. and hug Him with her soft tender

hands- the bangles; the ear studs, the curls of black

tresses press and leave marks on His shoulders.

Alavandhaar enjoys Para, vibhava and vyooha here in

archA avathAram. There are lots of scriptural

evidences that the Lord has four shoulders and hence

it is completely in accordance with saasthrAs.

sundaratthOLgaL [most beautiful shoulders] –says

Kamban , It feels : "ThOL KandAr ThOLE KandAr" When

Rama walked in the streets of MithilA, those who saw

His shoulders see only those shoulders; they are

unable to take their eyes from that. The

aanandAnubhavam of HanumAn , when the thankful

RamachandrA embraced with His hands and powerful

shoulders. His messenger (Raama dhUthan) for bringing

the auspicious news of finding His piratti in the city

of LankhA. Sri RaamA acknowledged that the embrace of

His is all the wealth that he had to confer on HanumAn

for his unmatched service: yEsha SarvasvabhUthO mE

parishvanghO HanUmatha:

[From Sri Anbil mama’s write up:] At the time of

Coronation, Sri Raama wanted to gift something

valuable to Hanuman as a token of gratitude for all

the help he had rendered. But could not find one as

adequate recompense. So, he offered himself and

embraced Hanumaan. Except for Sita, the only other

person who had the blessings of an embrace of the Lord

was Hanumaan. What greater object could he give than

this?

The coolness of that embrace associated with the

powerful shoulders and the comfort that the nAyaki

(ParAnkusa Naayaki) derived from those shoulders

holding her tight is described by her as being under

the cool shade of the fragrant KaRpakA tree.

(Thiruvaimozhi 6.6.6).
