Dear Devotees,

In my original message, the following concluding paragraph was missed;

kindly add it to the text:

Dasan,

Krishnaswamy

This body of ours is the Land of Praak-Jyotisa where the light-Divine

ever-shines and ought to enlighten us. But we have allowed it to be ruled by

Naraka, the self-centered, desire dominated and power hungry Ego. When we

realize our erroneous ways and seek His help, Krishna surely comes, fills

our consciousness, drives away the negative tendencies and delivers us. We

ourselves will become beacons of light-divine - Deepavali -- to illuminate

ourselves and others and make this our body a heaven, not the hell --the

Naraka that we had allowed it to become.

Fw: Deepavali

Respected Sir,

While browsing the net, I happen to come across an article which said that in South India, oil bath is taken on the morning of Naraka Chaturdasi day. It tied this practice to the killing of Naraka on this day. Soon after, I ran into another article that said that the South Indian custom is to take oil bath on Diwali day (New Moon day) before sunrise. Are there several customs in practice? If so, which groups observe the former custom and which groups observe the latter custom?

Appreciate your clarification of the practices.

Thank you

Regards

Sabitha

Dear Sabitha,

As per shastras, oil bath is not to be taken before sunrise. However, on the day of Deepavali, the shastras indicate that taking oil bath before sunrise is equivalent to taking bath in the Ganges.

For those having to pefrom 'tharpanam' on the that day, if Amavasya falls, the general custom is to take oil bath betore sunrise, wear new clothes. After sun rise, he has to take again bath and peform the tharpanam as in the normal course. Some elders skip the oil bath in the morning, wait for the sun rise, take normal headbath and do the tharpanam and then wear the new clothes. Well. Customs do differ. Some sects in Tamil Nadu, celeberate the Deepavali, the day next to the day when the general public celeberate the deepavali. But the poin to note is that oil bath before sunrise on other days is prohibited by the shastras.
