Guest guest
Nampaduvan used to sing on Thirukkurungudi Nambi everyday. He never went close to Nambi as he was born in so called lower caste of society. This was a good reason for Perumal to show His kalyana gunam to Nampaduvan. He made the dwaja sthambam to move little bit away from stright line so that Nambi can easily worship Perumal from distance. Even today, we can see the dwaja sthambam little away from straight line in front of Perumal. One day he was obstructed by a brahma rakshas. Brahma rakshas was actually a brahmin in his previous birth. Since he was not able to commpletely fulfil the requirements of yagam, he became a rakshas. His name was Soma sharma. He was feeling very hungry. He wanted to eat Nampaduvan. Nampaduvan assured him that he will complete his kaimkaryam to Perumal and come back to him. The conversation continued as brahma rakshas was not convinced. Nampaduvan told the following words as the cosequence if he was not able to keep up the promise, ‘If I don’t return to you after the singing on Nambi, let me get all the sin that one would get if one worships anyone other than Vasudevan.' We can refer to Nammazhwar's pasuram in TiruvAymozhi on AdhippirAn in Alwar Thirunagari, ‘onRunN dhEvu mulagum uyirum maRRum yaadhumillaa anRu, naanmugan dhannodu dhEva rulagO duyir_padaiththaan, kunRam pOlmaNi maadam needu thirukkuru gooradhanuL, ninRa aadhippi raan_niRka maRRaith dheyvam naadudhirE.’ Immediately the rakshas let Nampaduvan to finish his kaimkaryam. After singing on Nambi, Nampaduvan loyally was on his way to the place of rakshas. Nambi, in the form of an old person stopped Nampaduvan, and asked him to take another route. Nampaduvan refused to do so. Once the rakshas saw Nampaduvan, he slowly started to get thoughts on his previous birth. Hence, he requested Nampaduvan to give the phala sruti of the songs. Nampaduvan replied that he could not do that as he never sang on Perumal expecting any phalam. Nambi somehow appeared in Nampaduvan’s mind and asked him to give the last verse of the song. Nampaduvan immediately did that. Eventually the rakshas got back his old form of Brahman and fell at the feet of Nampavan. The last verse was the one that was sung on a raagam called ‘kaisikam’. The entire episode happened on an ekAdasi day. Hence, Kaisika ekAdasi is very special for Thirukkurungudi Nambi. It comes in the month of karthigai in the sukla paksham. Grand utsavam happens in this Kshetram even today. The entire episode was narrated by Perumal to Bhoomi Devi Thayar in VarAha puranam. This episode is called as Kaisika Puranam. Kaisika puranam is so special that Swami Parasar Bhattar has written vyAkyAnam for this. Even today, it is read in front of NamPerumal too. There are 3 characters in this natakam. Thirumeni kavalargal live in the temple premises for 9 days before kaisika ekAdasi, take bath in karandam Adu Poigai, and cook their own food. One will be Brahma rakshas, the othe two are Nambi kizhavan and Nampaduvan. Azhwars and Acharyas will be in front of Perumal. The pasurams on Nambi will be recited. The natakam happens even today. Let us look at the influence on the lives of Azhwars and their anubhavams in the next few posting, aDiyEn, ramanan
