thetta pazham

No, this not a discussion on the oft heard 'sutta pazham' or 'sudAdha pazham'.

The rich tamil divine langauage has got different accent at different

places. periyAzhwAr uses the word 'paiya'-"paiyavEa thalai sAipadahan

munnam'. nam-AzhwAr mentions the term "chikkenach siridhOr idamum ".

These terms are peculiar and unique to those regions from where they

hail from.

However, these terms have become popular and everybody knows the meanings.

There are certain terms used only in certain local areas which have

special meanings and unless one is familiar one does not comprehend

the real import of the term.

The following pAsuram goes to prove this aspect aptly.

"aniLgal thAva,nettilaya karum kamugin senkAi vEzha,nEl

palavin thAzh sinayil pEnath thetta pazham sidhaindhu madhu sorium.." 3-3-8:

The squirrels which jump here and there make the pAkku fruit to fall

on the ripe jackfruit and the honey gets mixed in this kAzhisErama

viNNagar divya-dEsam

vudyavar was wondering what this term 'thetta pazham' could be.When he

was passing through the region, one of the person there was asking for

'thetta pazham'. Immediately, He asked him, what was that? he told

that it was a ripened fruit. He realised immediately that this was a

'local term'-dhisaich sol- and AzhwAr had accordingly put this in the

pAsuram and enjoyed that greatly.

That is

"thetta pazham"
