Guest guest
Dear All, ‘aaNnaikaaththo raaNnaikonRa thanRiyaayar piLLaiyaay…’ The above line is from Thirumazhisai Azhwar’s Thiruchandaviruttam. Azhwar asks Perumal about His leela in protecting one elephant where as killing another one. Kannan killed the elephant called Kuvalayapeetam when He was approaching Kamsan’s palace. This act was well enjoyed by Thirumangai Azhwar in the first pasuram for Thiruvallikkeni. Thirumazhisai Azhwar talks about protecting Gajendran, another elephant in the above line of his pasuram in thiruchandaviruttam. Thirumangai Azhwar enjoys the same act in different pasuram on Thiruvallikkeni. He sings on Gajendra Varadan in Thiruvallikkeni by describing the act of protecting Gajendran from the jaws of a crocodile. Here is the beautiful pasuram, ‘meenamar poygai nNaaNmalar koyvaan vEtkaiyi NnOdusen RizhinNdha, kaanamar vEzham kaiyeduth thalaRak karaavadhan kaalinaik kadhuva, aanaiyin thuyaram theerappuL LoornNdhu senRunNin Raazhithot taanai, thEnamar sOlai maadamaa mayilaith thiruvallik kENikkaN dEnE’ Why should Perumal act differently to the same jAthi of living being? The act of killing Kuvalayapeetam was very obvious because it stood against Kannan. In the second case, more justification is needed. Kannan Himself talks about this in Bhagavat Geeta. He tells Arjuna, ‘Oh Arjuna, the entire world of samsara is kind of a net out of which you can never come out’ Arjuna was very scared to listen to this, and wanted to get back to the same thought of not going for battle. Krishna repleid to Arjuna in the same context with the following, ‘Arjuna, you need to listen to me fully. I told that you can never come out of this samsara net. This is the case when you try to come out of it. With the Grace of me, you can easily come out of the net of samsara’ There was an araiyar in Thirunaraiyur, who used to tell that even the fly's net is very difficult to break, how could it be possible for us to break the net of samsara, that was built by Perumal. If we go back to the story of Gajendran, he was trying to break the net by himself all through, and finally decided that he could not come out of the jaws by himself. Hence, he left the flowers he was holding and screamed ‘Adhi moolame’ to offer that pushpam at His feet. Perumal immediately came to the rescue of Gajendran. This story was narrated by Thirumangai Azhwar when he sang on Gajendra Varadan. With his usual and unique style, he finished the pasuram by worshipping that Gajendra Varadan in Thiruvallikkeni. Let us enjoy Thirumangai Azhwar’s anubhavam on Thelliya Singam in the next posting, aDiyEn, ramanan
