“endrO thiruvAdi pooram emakkAga

andrO engu Andal avadhariththAl

kundrAdha vAzhvAna vaikunda vAn pOgan thannai egazhindhu

Azhvar thirumagalArAi”

 

Says swamy manavala mAmunikal in his upadesa rathinamAlai. “EmakkAga

andrO engu Andal avadhariththal” Sri bhoomi piratti took avatara as

andal only for the sake of all innocent souls like us. If perumal

alone took an avatara then he will land up not catching even a single

jeevatma since all the sins of the jeevatma will first come in front

of his eyes. If then piratti is by his side then she does the

purushakAram and makes the krupai of emperuman fall on the poor

jeevatmas. So whenever emperuman takes an avatara, piratti also

comes down due to her immense grace on all of us.

 

When that is the case with Sridevi nAchiyar the grace of bhoomi devi

nachiyar wins over sridevi. How? Sridevi takes avatara only when

perumal takes avatara but bhoomi piratti took a special avatara

leaving all her joy in vaikundam “vaikunda vAn pOgam thannai

egazhindhu” as Andal, the daughter of periazhvar for the sake of her

kids. In this avatara she did two services liked very much by

emperuman. “poomalai toduththu pAmAlai pAdudhal” She made beautiful

flower garlands following the kainkaryam of her father and also sang

beautiful paasurams on emperuman.

 

Our acharyas say that being “anju kudikkoru sandhadhi” the child of

all the azhvars andal excelled her fathers. Nothing can be equated

to her thiruppAvai paasurams. Ayee jananyAcharya swamy in his

IrAyirappadi vyakhyanam to thiruppAvai shows one excellent Ithihyam.

The verse is quoted below:

 

“EmperumAnArai ‘Oruru thiruppAvaikku arththam arulich cheiyya vEnum’

enna; ‘ThiruppallAndukku Al kidaikkilum thiruppAvaikku Al

kidaiyAdhu..mOvAyezhuindha muradar ketkaikku adhikArigalallar.

MulaiezhundhAr kEtka vEnum. Avargalilum emperumAnai thAngal

anubhavikka vEnum endrirukkum parivANichchigalAna pirAttimArkkum

ketka nilamalla; pala solli en? Paththu azhvargaludaiya

sArabhoodhaiyAna thAnE solli thAnE kEtkumiththanai’ endru

arulichcheidhAr”

 

A few came to emperumanar and requested him to deliver the meanings of

thiruppavai to them. EmperumAnAr replied, “It is possible to find a

person to tell the meanings of thiruppalAndu but it is not possible

to find one who can say the meanings flooded in thiruppavai.

Moreover the tough men with beard are not eligible to hear. Only

ladies that too those who think that they are going to enjoy

emperuman are not eligible. Why should I say so much; Andal who is

considered as the essence of all the azhvars only has the eligibility

to tell and listen to thiruppavai”.

 

If these words came out of the mouth of swamy emperumAnAr adorned as

ThiruppAvai jeeyer by our poorvacharyas what to say about the others?

EmperumAnAr was immersed in 30 paasurams-ThiruppAvai and swamy

parasara bhattar who had the paripoorna katAksham of swamy right from

his birth was immersed in another 30 paasurams- ThirunedunthAndakam

say our acharyas.

 

Since emperumAnAr himself says that no one has the eligibility to talk

about thiruppavai shall we just stop now? No if that was our acharyas

anushtanams we wouldn’t have got so many vyakhyanams and will not

hear thiruppAvai upanyasams everywhere this marghazhi month. It is

the prime duty of each one of us to try to learn atleast a drop in

that ocean of thiruppavai each day. Surely due to the grace of

bhoomi piratti and her beloved Sri Parthasarathi emperuman we will

succeed atleast in enjoying the essence of that divine prabhandam to

the smallest extent possible.
