There are three types of people in this world. The first category of

people without any purpose find happiness in harming others they are

called as “adhaman”. The second category of people take care of

themselves and only for their own selfish interest (for their well

being) harm others they are called as “madhyaman”. The last category

of people very rare nowadays sacrifices themselves for the welfare of

others they are called as “uththaman”. Emperuman falls under the

last category or rather he is “uthamOthaman” (First among the

“uththamans”) who does anything for the sake of his devotees. He

will make himself as low as a beggar (vamanAvatara) or a servant

carrying message from one place to other (Pandava dhoothan).

 

In the last paasuram, andal talked about the prime duty of all

Srivaishnavas to sing the praise of the divine thiruvadi of emperuman

(“paraman adi pAdi”). Immediately she was reminded of the wonder that

the thiruvadi did by measuring all the three worlds. Emperuman placed

his divine feet on everyone and showed that he is the paramapurushan,

head of all. Brahma washed the divine feet and that divine water was

held by shiva on his head showing that they are also servitudes of

that divine lord.

 

The lord’s divine feet touched all our heads only once but that which

comes to our help even now is his divine thirunAmam. That is why Sri

Alavandaar asks, “Oh! Lord when are you going to place your thiruvadi

on my head once again” Even now if we say “thiruvikramA” emperuman

immediately rescues us from this ocean of samsAra. Gajendran

couldn’t see emperuman’s thiruvadi but he only called him by his name

“AdhimoolamE!” While drowpathi was in danger in the court of gauravas

krishna wasn’t present there. So she shouted for help, ”Ha! Krishna

dwarkanilAchuta govinda pundareekAksha rakshamAm sharanAgatham”. A

beautiful sutra of pillai ulagariyan says, “drowpathikku AbhaththilE

pudavai surandhadhu thirunAmamirE” so the thirunamam by itself

rescued drowpathi there was no need for emperuman to rush to that

place. So we see that emperuman who is uththaman waits to help his

devotees and hence just by uttering his thirunamam will do all the

good we need even he is not necessary and hence andal says it is our

prime duty as a Srivaishnava to sing the divine names of emperuman

(thirunAma sankeerthanam) “uththaman pEr pAdi”.

 

In the case of gajendra emperuman rushed to the spot to rescue him

from the crocodile but in the case of drowpathi he didn’t do so.

Why? Gajendran called for emperuman not only to rescue himself from

the crocodile but also to submit the flower in his hand to the divine

feet of the lord (kainkaryam) so for the sake of accepting the flower

given by his dear bhaktha with love emperuman rushed to the spot.

But drowpathi shouted only for saving her dignity and hence she was

blessed with sarees. Thus it is seen that the thirunAma has the

greatness of blessing us with whatever we want. If we wish for the

kainkaryam of emperuman then it blesses us with the same.

 

Let us see more about the greatness of this thirunAmam in the next

posting. Still then let us all keep singing his divine names,

“uththaman pEr pAdi”
