Dear Sri VaishNavAs :

 

Until now , we covered the introductory sections of

Bhagavadh AarAdhanam upto the placement of

the vessels for this sacred ceremony .We have now come to

the branch in the road that takes us further to detailed ( Ghana)

AarAdhanam or shorter ( Laghu ) AarAdhanam . For Ghana

AarAdhanam to be done by those , who have the time , reference

is made to help from the knowledgable elders or AchAryAs or

through Ahnikam treatises on Sri VaishNava SadAchAra NirNayam

( HH Srimath Azhagiya Singar's Ahnika Grantham ) or the summary of

AarAdhanam section from there by Sri Venkata Raghavan :

We will cover one version of the Laghu AarAdhanam procedures here .

 

After Sankalpam for (Laghu) BhAhyArAdhanam and placement of

the two vessels (SarvArTa ThOyam and Prathigraha Paathrams) and

the filling of the SarvArTa Thoya vessel with water admixed with ParimaLam

( special ingredients referred to in the previous posting ) , we are ready for

the start of the laghu AarAdhanam .

 

Invitation to the Sacred VirajA River to enter into the AarAdhana Jalam

Touch the SarvArta ThOyam vessel with pavithra finger of the right hand,

recite AshtAksharam seven times and consecrate the water with manthram:

" (PraNavam ) NamO NaarAyaNAya, SarvArtha ThOyam ParikalpayAmi ".

 

Use the special spoon ( UddharaNi ) to take one measure of water from

the consecrated vessel, (add a flower and TuLasi leave if available )

and place the UddhariNi water in the palm of the left hand , Cover

that with the right palm , lift it upto the chest level and recite AshtAksharam

four times. Then say : " Vim Virajaayai Nama: , yEhyEhi VirajE ! AagaccchA-

gaccha ! " . Meditate that the Viraja river flowing in Sri Vaikuntam

has entered the water in the palm and use it sprinkle it on the AarAdhana

vessels/accessories , the ArchA Moorthy/PerumAL and Self . Reflect that

the dhivya dEham suitable to perform Bhagavath AarAdhanam has been

blessed now.

Seeking the Lord's permission

Get permission from the Lord to perform His AarAdhanam by performing

PushpArchanam to the Lord : place a pushpam on the head of the Lord

with manthram : (PraNavam) AadhAra Sakthyai Nama: " and place another

pushpam at the sacred feet of the Lord with the manthram : "(PraNavam)

Puratha: PadhapeeDAya Nama: ". Medidate on the AchAryan and say:

 

" hE Bhagavan! ThvadhArAdhanAya Maamm anujaaneehi ".

 

Please recite the prayer invoking the Lord to arrive along with His Devis and

Parijanams and to stay for His AarAdhanam and accept all the aasanams

from Manthraasanam to PunarmanthrAsanam :

 

Ijyaakaalas-thrutheeyOyam ahnOmsas-samupAgatha:

sambhruthAsccha sambhAraa: KalpithAnyAsanAnyapi

snAnAdhyarTaani DevEsa! TavEcchA vartathE yadhi

avalOkana-dhAnEna tath sarvam saphalam kuru

TadharTam sahadhEveebhyAm sanugais-sachivaissaha

madhanugrahAya krupayA hyathraaganthum Thvamarhasi

yaavadhyAsanam manthrAsanAntham poojyasE mayaa

thAvath saannidhyam athraiva kurushva PurushOtthama !

 

( Meaning): Oh Lord ! The third division of the day (Ijyaa kaalam)

has arrived. The saamagriyAs / needed material for Your AarAdhanam

have been assembled. The aasanams for the different stages of

the AarAdhanam are siddham /ready . Please cast Your auspicious

glances on them and make them fulfilled .

 

Please arrive at this poojA graham with Your consorts and Servants

( Parijanams) and bless adiyEn .Please make Your presence from

the first aasanam ( ManthrAsanam) to PunarmanthrAsanam !

 

ManthrAsanam

" ManthrAsanAya Nama: , (PraNavam) NamO NaarAyaNAya

ManthrAsanam SamarpayAmi , Assanam prathigruhNeeshva ",

PaadhukAbhyAm Nama: " . Take a spoon of water , add pushpam

and say : "(PraNavam) NamO NaarAyaNAya , arghyam samarpayAmi" .

show that consecrated water in the uddhariNi to the Lord , request

Him to accept it and seek His pardon for any lapses and afterwards join it

to water in Prathigraha Paathram . Please say : "Paadhyam SamarpayAmi"

after taking 2 spoonfuls of water from SarvArtha ThOyam vessel , show

it to the Lord and place it in the Prathigraha paathram. Follow that

with" aachamaneeyam SamarpayAmi " with three spoons of

water , present it to the Lord and then place it in the Prathigraham .

 

Repeat similarly the presentation of Arghya, Paadhya , aachamaneeyam

offering to the Lord's consorts and AchAryan and say :

 

" Sri BhUmi NeeLAdhibhyO nama: , asmath AchAryAdhibhyO Nama: ,

argya Paadhya aachamaneeyam samarpayAmi "

 

Follow thru the above procedures for presenting arghyam ,

Paadhyam and aachamaneeyam to them all .

 

SnAnAsanam

recite : " aathmAthmeeyamcha sarvam nithya kinkarathvAya sveekuru ,

(PraNavam) NamO NaarAyaNAya , SnAnAsanam samarpayAmi " .

Add TuLasi and/or Pushpam to water and offer arghya , Paadhya ,

aachamaneeyam as before .

 

Recite MaathrA dhAnam samarpayAmi " and place PerumAL in

the special plate used for His sacred bath . Recite : " dhanthAvana

jihvA nirlEhana kaNDUshAthikam samarpayAmi" with the spoon of

water consecrated by TuLasi and ring the sacred bell ( KanDushakam

means Vaai KoppaLitthal or rinsing the mouth ) ; if Purusha Sooktham is

known , perform thirumanjanam to the accompaniment of it or

use AshtAksharam for the sacred bath accompanied by the GhantA

Naadham . Next , dry the Lord and return Him to His Koil AzhwAr .

 

AlankArAsanam

After returning Him to His original abode , recite : (PraNavam)

NamO NaarAyaNAya , AlankArAsanam SamarpayAmi " and

repeat arghya , Padhya , Aachamaneeya upachArams.

 

Now offer Sandal paste (Gandham) , Pushpam , Dhoopam ( lit lamp ),

Dheepam ( camphor) and discard the burnt camphor . Offer Achamaneeyam

thereafter with 3 spoons of water and discard in Prathigraha Paathram.

Perform Archanai starting from ( PraNavam ) KesavAya Nama:

to (PraNavam) DhAmOdharAya Nama: and conclude with

" SrI BhUmi NeeLA SamEtha SrImathE NaarAyaNAya Nama: " .

Perform AshtAkshara Japam thereafter .

 

BhOjyAsanam

Recite : " (PraNavam) NamO NaarAyaNAya , BhOjyAsanam

SamarpayAmi " . add TuLasi to water from SarvArtha ThOya vessel

and offer as before arghya , Paadhya , aachamaneeyam to the Lord.

Recite : " arhaNAmbhu SamarpayAmi " and show a spoon of

water to the Lord and add a sprinkling of ghee to the rice , lentil

and sweets ( if no coked material , show the spoon of water

and sprinkle the fruit or raisins et al) ; say the ParishEcahana

Manthram and PrANAUhUthi manthrams (see below) . Then say :

(PraNavam) NamO NaarAyaNAya , dhivyAnnam , Paayasam ,

Bhakshya Vargam , Madhu , dadhi NiVedhayAmi " offer

a spoon of water and say : "Paaneeyam SamarpayAmi " ,

AmruthApithA namasi ; hastha prakshALana kaNDUshAn

samarpayAmi "; release that spoon of water into Prathigraha

Paathram . Offer similarly BhOjyAsanam for the Lord's consorts

and His AchAryAs : " SrI BhUmi NeeLAdhibhyO Nama:

Ananatha Garuda VishvaksEnaadhibhyO Nama : ,asmath

AchArya VaryEbhyO Nama: , dhivyAnnam Bhakshyam

Paayasam nivEdhayAmi " .

to a spoon of water ; offer arghya-Paadhya-aachamaneeyam as before.

Offer fruit , betel leaves ( Thaampoolam ) et al . SaaRRu MuRai ,

gheetham , Naatya UpachArams should be done here . But as

a custom , SaRRu MuRai is done at the Next aasaana samarpaNam

( ParyankAsanam). SaaRRumuRai can be elaborate or short based

on one's awareness ( Veda Manthrams , Dhivya Prabhandham , ThiruppAvai

last two Paasurams et al).

 

ParyankAsanam

Recite " (PraNavam) ParyankAsanAya Nama:, (PraNavam )

PaadhukAbhyAm Nama: " Offer arghya , Padhya , aachamaneeyam ,

have SaaRumuRai , remove the used garlands and preapre the Lord

for His yOga Nidhraa . Seek His pardon for deficencies in AarAdhanam

with the prayers:

 

Ajn~Adh aTavaa Jn~Adh asubham yanmayA krutham

Kshanthum arhasi tath sarvam dhAsyEna cha gruhANa maamm

 

Jn~AnathO ajn~AnathO vaapi vihitham yanmayaa subham

Tath sarvam poorNamEvAsthu preethO bhava JanArdhana !

 

(Oh JanArdhana! Please pardon me for all trespasses and blemishes

committeed consciously or ootherwise and accept me as Your servant .

Please perfect all these deficiencies and make them complete and

be pleased with me) .

(Oh PurushOtthama! Please forgive all these upachArams

offered daily , which are apachArams ).

 

Perform Aachamaneeyam .

svasEshathaikarasEna anEna aathmanaa svakeeyai: cha

dEhEndhriyAntha: karaNai: svakeeya kayANatama

dhravyamayAn oupachArika -saamsparsika-saandhrushtika -

aapyavahArikadhi samastha bhOgAn athiprabhUdhAn ,

athipriyatamAn , akhila parijana paricchadhAnvidhAya

Svasmai SvapreethayE SvayamEva prathipAthidhavAn "

 

Partake Theertham , TuLasi and SaThAri thereafter .

 

Then the Maanaseeka Prayer is to VishvaksEnar and others ,

who guard PerumAL to protect Him and return Him for next

day's aarAdhanam and leaving without worry to attend to

other things in the world of Loukeekam .

Daasan , Oppiliappan Koil VaradAchAri Sadagopan

 

P.S : SaalagrAma AarAdhanam is the simplest to perform .

Vigraha AarAdhanam has specific difficulties to overcome.

The two mile radius around SaaLagrAma Moorthy is sacred.

The Saala grAmams (be they full with good chakram

or have cracks ) are worthy of worship, do not need

invocation (aavahanam ) due to nithya Saanidhyam ;

they do not need prathishtai (Consecration ) , Saanthi ,

parihAram ,or PrAyascchittham . AbhishEkam with

pure milk is sufficent . The SaaLagrAma worship

confers BhOgam in this world , removes all dhOshams

and blesses one with Moksham .

Adiyen may please be excused for sending this mail (a little bit long one)

directly to Swamin and not through Oppliappan group

Firstly, adiyen wants to know whether the Acharya Ramanuja CD-ROM for bhagavath

Aradhanam is available and whether it can be sent to adiyen. If so, what

is the cost?

Regarding adiyen's doubt about bhagavath Aradhanam:

Adiyen when came to this country 18 years back, did not bring salagramam

due to obvious reasons and also was told that salagramam should not be taken

beyond bharatha kandam - "kadal thAndi koNdu pogakoodathu".

Adiyen had the bhagyam of Baranyasam performed by HH Srimad Azhagiya singar

almost exactly a year back. When adiyen asked HH jeer about taking salagramam,

HH was kind enough to tell that salagramam can be taken overseas and that

there is no such restriction. Adiyen now had the bhagyam of getting a salagramam

just a week back from my relative who has gone to India and will be coming

back after 6 months or so. For the time being, adiyen is reciting Purusha

sooktam, Sri Sooktam, salagrama dhayana slokam, Daya sadhakam, Swamy Desikan's

Sri Sthuthi etc. and then does naivedhyam.

Adiyen was told that the procedure for the Aradhanam - lagu or ghana is

first to be learnt (or initiated) by a knowledgeable person. One of adiyen's

friend who does regularly bhagavath Aradhanam and who is fairly well versed

on anushtanams, said that as long as one had pancha samskaram, one can perform

the Aradhanam and there is no need to wait and no need to be initiated by

some body. Adiyen will be much obliged for swamin's advise on this. Adiyen

is having the books - Sri Vaishnava Dinacharya, SriVaishnavam published

by Sri Thillaisthanam Swamy kainkarya Sabha, Bangalore and lagu thiruvaradhana

kramam by Lifco book.

Adiyen is sorry for troubling Swamin.

Dear Sriman Sadagopan swaminDasasya vignapanamadiyen wants to know

whether the Acharya Ramanuja CD-ROM for bhagavath Aradhanam is

Originally , this CD ROM was recorded in Microsoft 98 (MS98).

It worked well . When the new MS Operating Systems came about ,

there was some incompatibility in the video play areas and

that made it difficult to play the CD ROM in new machines .

Some bhakthAs , who are knowledgable about these system

compatibilities have fixed the problem and it works for them.

 

In view of the precious content of the AchArya RaamAnujA CD ROM ,

both Dr.M.A.Alwar and myelf plan to bring the older version play on

the new machines and we are looking in to it for release in few

weeks .

 

We wish to combine it with the completion of work on Part II of

AzhwAr Vaibhavam ( Life and their Prabhandhams ). The First

part covered the Vaibhavam of the three Mudhal AzhwArs ,

PeriyAzhwAr , ANDAL , ThiruppANar and Thondaradippodi

in a multimedia format . The remaining five AzhwArs and

their Prabhandhams ( NammAzhwAr , Madhura Kavi ,Thirumangai,

KulasEkharar and Thirumazhisai ) have to be covered in

the Second Part . We need some funds to complete this work

and I have appealed to BHakthAs to support this Kaimkaryam .

I am very happy to know that you have Saalagraama Moorthy at your house.

Please try to get one or two dhwAraka silAs since together , they form a formidable

prsence of Bhagavan in the house . As I mentioned elsewhere , the sanctity of

the house having Saalagramam extends upto 2 miles radius. Having 12 Saalagramams

make your house a Dhivya dEsam . Thanks to the munificence of a devotee in

Chennai , adiyEn's Saalagraama Moorthams went upto Twelve along with 2 DhwArakA SilAs .

As Srimath Azhagiya Singar has stated , SaaLagramams can travel overseas

and provide immense happiness for us thru performance of AarAdhanam

for the Lord thru Nithya Saanidhyam.Adiyen was told that the procedure
