“taiyil magam endru dAraniyeer eRRam endha

taiyil magaththukku sARRuginrEn- tuyya

madhi peRRa mazhisai pirAn pirandha nAlendru

nal tavargal kondAdum nAl” (upadesa ratina mAlai)

Hope all of you would have had a wonderful taiyil magam, Thirumazhisai

Azhvar thirunakshatra celebrations. Let us enjoy his paasuram on this

day and join his ghosti.

Paasuram-32

“kadhai porul thAn kannan thiruvayiRRinuLLa

vudhaipaLavu pOdhu pOkkindRi-vadhaiporulthAn

vAindha gunaththu padAdhadhu adaiminO

Ayindha guNaththAnadi”

In the previous paasuram, thirumazhisai piran used some harsh words

like “perumAnai EththAdha pEigAl” Immediately an objection was

raised. “Is it right for Azhvar, filled with sattva guna to use such

words to scold others?” Azhvar answers the same in this paasuram. “I

did not use such words wanting to scold or hurt them, it came out of

my mouth due to the deep feeling for those jeevatmas who are

unnecessarily destroying themselves. Moreover, are these people who

do not show interest in bhagavat vishayam actually not only

destroying themselves but also spoiling others who are following

them? So what I told is just the fact. Why should there be any

objection for this. But if the same person who I have criticized in

the previous paasuram understand the greatness of bhagavat vishayam

and get involved in that then they are to be credited.

(kadhai porul thAn) kadhai – Ithihasa puranas that give more

importance to stories. Porulai – smritis that give importance to

tattvas. It is eminent that “karumAyam pEsil kadhai” refers to

mahabharata, vishnupuranas etc.

(kadhai porul thAn kannan thiruvayiRRinuLLa) Those Smriti, Ithihasa

puranas that talk all about your fate in the foetus of a mother (karu

mAyam), all depend on the sankalpa of emperuman. He alone can save us

from all those difficulties.

(kadhai porul thAn pOdhu pOkkindRi) Not even leaving a single moment.

The commentary of Appillai is slightly different here. The meaning

of these paasura lines according to Appillai are as follows: As said

in the ithihasa puranas all the jeevas, not leaving a single moment

stay in his divine stomach, and due to his divine sankalpa remain

with divine glory.

(vAindha guNaththu padAdhadhu vadhai porul thAn) If one lives without

getting involved in the astonishing divine kalyana gunas of emperuman

every moment (not even leaving a second) then is it not parahimsai

(hurting others)?

How does it become parahimsai?

By not getting involved in bhagavat vishayam and concentrating on

other inferior matters he not only puts himself into a ditch but also

shows a wrong path to all under him. In that way, he destroys his

existence and also spoils others (“asanyEva”). The existence of such

people is equal to non-existence declare the sastras.

(vudhaipalavu … vadhai porul thAn)

“yan mukurtham kshaNam vApi vAsudevO na chinthyathE I

sA hAnis than mAchitram sA prAnthis sA cha vikriyA II”

(The moment in which vasudeva is not though about is lowly; that is

fatal; that is destructive; that is dreadful;) say the rishis

Appillai says, “The jeevas who are involved in lowkika pleasures in

turn harming themselves and others can never get involved in the

divine beauty of emperuman”

(adaiminO ayindha guNathAN adi) Emperuman’s kalyana gunas are

beautifully selected gems. There are absolutely no flaws all are

only divine qualities then what is the hesitation for you to fall to

his divine feet? Azhvar urges everyone to surrender to the divine

feet of emperuman. He says, “if you all fall to his feet then I who

criticized you will have to credit you as a bhagavata”
