Is our wish to attain the divine feet of emperuman greater or his

thirst to attain the jeevatma greater?

Azhvars and andal sung so many paasurams in deep love towards the lord

and suffered so much in his separation. So is it that the wish of

andal/azhvar to attain emperuman greater? That is what they thought

till they reached the footsteps of krishna. Andal thought, “Oh! I

have taken so much pain to sing thiruppavai, knock the doors of so

many gopis and along with them have reached the house of krishna,

waking up nandagopan, yesodha, balarama, krishna and nappinnai. But

krishna is still in his beds” But only after reaching krishna did she

realise that atleast she had the strength to do all these but

krishna’s thirst to attain her was so much that he has lost all his

strength and hence he is unable to get out of his bed.

That is the great thirst of the lord to attain each and every

jeevatma. That is why he has left his divine abode and has descended

to this world of suffering as archAvatara. Today in most of the

temples more apacharams (ill treatment) is done than any upacharam

(honour). But does the lord react to any of these. He with a smile

in his divine face (thirumugam) keeps on showering his grace on one

and all. He considers all our sins as a quality and forgets the same

with his natural vatsalyam (mother love. “kundranaya kuRRam seiyyinum

gunam kollum”)

Swamy Nammazhvar says, “vArikkondunnai vizhunguvAn kAnil endru ArvuRRu

ennai ozhiya ennil munnam pAriththu thAN ennai muRRa pariginAn”

Nammazhvar was waiting to reach thirukAtkaraiappan and was immersed

in the divine anubhavam. Emperuman came and nammazhvar wanted to

surrender to the lord’s divine feet. Slowly nammazhvar opened his

eyes and saw that he was no more in azhvar thirunagari, but he was

inside the stomach of emperuman. Even before azhvar could do

anything, emperuman has already swallowed azhvar, due to his great

avA (interest) to attain azhvar.

Andal calls that emperuman who is filled with this great thirst to

attain the jeevatmas as “mAlE!” This term has 3 meanings according

to the tamil grammar. “karumai perumai maiyalumAm” Karumai indicates

the black colour, perumai indicates the greatness/supremacy of the

lord and maiyal indicates the love that lord has towards the

jeevatmas. The lord is crazy says thondaradipodigal, “aranganAya

piththanai peRRum andhO!”
