Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

 

First of all my heartiest best wishes for a very happy and bhakthi

filled new year `paarthibha' to all bhakthaas of the list. You may be

wondering what is the connection the lowly servant woman sabari

saying raama as `manlion' and prahlaadha talking to lord narasimha,

in particular, with reference to dhayaraani krithi of ST - which is

our topic. I am not going to deal that.

 

How "this krithi and the seventh skandham of srimadh bhaagavatham -

where prahlaadha charithram is dealt - are closely linked", is the

point of interest.

 

Lord brahma, the dhEvaas, naaradha and even the supreme lord's

consort sree lakshmi are afraid of nearing the angry narasimha, who

has just finished killing hiraNyakasipu. At that stage brahma pushed

the young prahlaadha to please the lord narasimha, to reduce his

anger, and prahlaadha started praying

"dhayaraanee, dhayaraanee, dhaasarathee raamaa" as stated by ST

 

as stated in bhaagavatham –

thathEthi sanakai: raajan mahaa-bhaagavathO~'rbhakah

upEthya bhuvi kaayEna nanama vidhrthanjali: || 7th skandham ch 9

slOkam 4

 

thatha- so be it;

ithi- thus accepting the words of Lord Brahma;

sanakai: - very slowly;

rajan- O King (Yudhisthira) [to whom naaradha is telling this story

as styled in bhaagavatham] mahaa-bhaagavatha: - the great exalted

devotee (prahlaadha)

arbhakah- although only a small boy;

upEthya - gradually going near;

bhuvi - on the ground;

kaayEna – by his body;

nanama- offered respectful obeisance

vidhrtha anjali: - folding his hands.

 

Meaning: Naaradha Muni continued: O King, although the exalted

devotee Prahlaadha was only a little boy, he accepted Lord Brahma's

words. He gradually proceeded toward Lord Narasimha and fell down to

offer his respectful obeisance with folded hands.

 

Point: when a devotee falls at the feet of the lord and does

saastaanga praNaamams, what else he is going to ask

except `dhayaraanee, dhayaraanee', that too when the lord is angry.

 

CharaNam 1: vivarimpa tharamaa raghuveera aanandha munu raamaa

meaning: The acts done by you, Oh bliss personified, raghu veeraa, am

I competent to explain them?

 

Sri prahlaadha uvaacha

brahmaadhayah suragaNaa munayO~tha sidhDhaa:

saththvaikaathana gathayO vachasaam pravaahai:

na aaraadhithum puru guNair adhunaapi pipru:

kim thOsthum arhathi sa mE harir ugrajaathE: || slokam 8, ch 9, 7th

skandham

 

sri prahlaadha: uvaacha - Prahlaadha prayed

brahmaadhaya: - headed by Lord Brahmaa

sura gaNaa: - the inhabitants of the upper world – the dhEvaas

munaya: - the great saintly persons

atha- as well (like the 4 Kumaras and others)

sidhDhah- who have attained perfection or full knowledge

saththvaa - to spiritual existence;

Ekathana gathaya: - who have taken without diversion to any material

activities

vachasaam – of descriptions or words;

pravaahai: - by streams

na - not

aaraadhithum – to satisfy

puru guNai: - although fully qualified

adhunaa - until now;

api - even;

pipruh - were able

kim - whether;

thOsthum - to become pleased;

arhathi - is able;

sah - He (the Lord);

mE - my;

hari: - the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

ugra-jaathE: - who am born in an asuric family.

 

meaning: Prahlaadha prayed - How is it possible for me, who have been

born in a family of asuraas, to offer suitable prayers to satisfy the

Supreme Personality of Godhead? Even until now, all the demigods,

headed by Lord Brahmaa, and all the saintly persons, could not

satisfy the Lord, by streams of excellent words, although such

persons are very qualified, being in the mode of goodness. Then what

is to be said of me? I am not at all qualified.

 

Point: is it not `vivarimpa tharamaa' – am I competent to explain the

acts done by you, oh lord – raama – raghu veeraa - Is it not a

veerach cheyal to kill hiraNyakasipu? then how can I describe that,

oh raamaa – the lionman.

 

CharaNam 2: thalachithE mEnella pulakarinchEnu raama

meaning: If I think of your leelaas, Oh raamaa, my entire body

horripillates.

 

sva paadhamulE pathitham tham arbhakam vilOkya dhEva: krpayaa

pariplutha:

uththaapya thacchirsny adhadhath karambujam kalahi vithrasthadhiyam

krtha abhayam ||

slOkam 5 – ch 9, 7th skandham

 

sva-paadhamulE - at His lotus feet;

pathitham - fallen;

tham - him (Prahlaadha);

arbhakam - only a little boy;

vilOkya – seeing

dhEva: - Lord Narasimha

krpayaa - out of His causeless mercy

pariplutha: - very much afflicted (in ecstasy)

uththaapya - raising

thath sirsni - on his head

adhadhath - placed

kara-ambujam - His lotus hand

kaala ahi - of the deadly snake of time, (which can cause immediate

death)

vithrastha - afraid

dhiyam- to all of those whose minds

krtha abhayam - which causes fearlessness.

 

Meaning: When Lord Narasimha saw the small boy Prahlaadha prostrated

at the soles of His lotus feet, He became most ecstatic in affection

toward His devotee. Raising Prahlaadha, the Lord placed His lotus

hand upon the boy's head because His hand is always ready to create

fearlessness in all of His devotees.

 

When Narasimha appeared, all the devotees became fearless for they

already knew that hiraNyakasipu will be killed, thereby their fearful

days are ending. The devotee's hope of becoming fearless is by

thinking and chanting the holy name of Narasimha. Also the slOkam

yathO yathO yaami thathO nrsimha:

wherever one goes, he must always think of Lord Narsimha. Then there

will be no fear for the devotee for he is `thooNilum iruppaar,

thurumbilum iruppaar', such a lord narasimha is present everywhere.

Further

 

sa thath kara sparsa dhuthakhilasubha: sapadhy abhivyaktha para

aathma dharsana:

thath paadha padhmam hrdhi nirvrthO dhadhau hrsyath thanuh klinna

hrdh asru lOchana: ||

slokam 6, ch 9, 7th skandham

 

sah- he (Prahlaadha)

thath kara sparsa - because of being touched on the head by the lotus

hand of lord Narasimha

dhutha - being cleansed;

akhila - all;

asubha: - inauspiciousness or material desires;

sapadhy - immediately;

abhivyaktha - manifested;

para aathma dharsana: - realization of the Supreme spiritual

knowledge

thath paadha padhmam - Lord Narasimha's lotus feet

hrdhi - within the core of the heart;

nirvrtha: - full of transcendental bliss

dhadhau - captured

hrsyath thanu: – having transcendental ecstatic bliss manifested in

the body;

klinna-hrdh - whose heart was softened due to transcendental ecstasy;

asru lOchana: - with tears in his eyes.

 

Meaning: By the touch of Lord Narasimha's hand on Prahlaadha's head,

Prahlaadha was completely freed of all material desires, as if he had

been thoroughly cleansed. Therefore he at once became ecstatic,

transcendentally situated, and all the symptoms of ecstasy became

manifest in his body. His heart filled with love, and his eyes with

tears, and thus he was able to completely capture the lotus feet of

the Lord within the core of his heart.

 

Point: when the lord is most ecstatic towards his devotee, is it not

but natural to the devotee also to realize that ecstasy? Not only

that when the lord himself places his hand on the devotee's head and

gives that abhaya mudhraa – then can anybody be else but

except `pulakarinchEnu raama'. Oh, what a way to describe.
