Same Words- Different Cannotations

The Greatness of Sri Periya vAchAn piLLai

 

The words "ANDAi vunnai-k kANBadhOAr aruL enakkaruLudhiyEAl--VEANDEAn

manai-vAzhk-kaiyai viNNagar mEAyavanEA" is repeated in the nine

pAsuram-s of the first thiru-mozhi of the sixth ten.

 

However, Sri Periya-vAchAn piLLai does not just mention that AzhwAr

wants to convey his longingness towards the Lord and disinterest in

this worldly attachments. He gives vyAkyAnam as per the context of

each pAsuram.

 

1. The first pAsuram:

ANDAi --Even when I was having interest in other matters, Oh! Lord You

were taking care of my welfare.

vunnai-k...--Having strived on me for such a long time, You should

shower Your grace on me to reap the results.

vEaNDEAn---Oh! Lord, be assured that it is not like earlier days where

I was interested in this samsAram. Please note that that I am

indifferent towards samsaram and interested in YOu.---Text :"innamum

ivanukku samsAra vAsanai kazhindhadhillai" enRu irukka vEANDA;enakku

lOka yAthraiyil ruchi illAmaiyai thiru-vuLLam paRRa vEANum.

 

Second pAsuram: The second pAsuram talks about the divine act of the

Lord in churning the ocean and reclaiming periya pirATTi.

Accordingly Sri Periya VAchAn piLLai :

ANDAi....---

'achEArthiyil nAn kaNDanubhavikkum padi en pakkalilEa kripaiyai paNNi

aruLudhiyAgil, aththEva jAdhi vunnai-koNDu pUN kaTTik koLLugiRa

samsAra yAthraiyai vEANDEAn;

 

Third pAsuram:ANDAi --- Oh! Lord do not leave me with the bad name of

immersing myself in this samsAram. Kindly bestow me with Your grace

to remove the swarUpa virOAdhi and act in tandem with the true nAture

of this jEvAthmA.

 

Fourth pAsuram: This pAsuram talks about the Lord swallowing one and all and lying on a small leaf.

ANDAi--- Oh! Lord, You need not do any such GReat deeds for me. It is

enough if YOu grace me a way to reach You.
