Guest guest
The Benefits of Mixed Farming. The basics of agriculture teach mixed farming. The fertility of the soil is maintained by sowing a different crop in between regular crops. When the farmers grow paddy, for instance, sugarcane is sometiems grown between two crops of paddy. ThirunaRaiyUr's rich agricutural heritage is sung by kaliyan. The tillers grow paddy amidst regular sugarcane crops. The lotus grows side by side. However, due to the original sugarcane land, it comes up automatically without being voluntarily sown. The efforts taken to bring up the red paddy yileds but even before that the sugarcane crops become standing in front in an imposing manner. The water resources and the fertility of the soil enables this rich agriculture occupation at thirunaRaiyUr. It also emphasises the fact that mixed farming was being practised in those days. Perhaps, it is all the more necessary in today's concept of scarcity of water. The pAsuram describing this : "sEr thazahitha kadhir sen-nel sen-kamalath idai-idaiyin, pAr thazahithu-k karumbOngi payan viLaikkum thirunaRaiyUr.." 6-9-7; dAsan vanamamalai padmanabhan
