Sri:

Dear Sri HayagrIva BhakthAs :

Let us reflect further on additional Sahasra Naamams of Lord HayagrIvan !

We will take up the next set of Sri HayagrIva Sahasra Naamams

in the next posting .

Selected NaamAs from 212-

***********************************

212) PurANAya Nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , who is in the form

of Saathvika PurANams ! He is PurANa Roopi .

213) IthihAsAya Nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , whose Vaibhavam is

being celebrated in the two IthihAsams ! He is IthihAsa Roopi .

214) SmruthayE Nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , who is

blessing us through the Smruthis (Tradiitonal scriptures , which

include the VedAngAs ( limbs of Vedams) , the law books ( Dharma

SaasthrAs) , the epics (IthihAsAs) and PurANAs like VishNu PurANam .

At another level Smruthi covers perception as a valid means of knowledge.

215) SoothrAya Nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan presiding over

the SoothrAs .

SoothrA here can refer to Brahma SoothrAs or Kalpa SoothrAs .

SoothrAs in general are set as aphorisms ( extremely condensed

and cryptic statements) requiring a commentary (BhAshyam) for explanation of

the TatthvArTams . Kalpa SoothrAs are one of the six limbs of VedAs

to help us conduct Vedic YaagAs and SamskArAs . Kalpa Texts are either

Srauta SoothrAs , which relate to the VedAs/Srithis or SmArta SoothrAs that

are based on Smruthis .

216) SamhithAyai Nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , who is in the form

of the various Veda Samhithais .

217) AachArAya nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , the Moola Purushan

for Vedic AachAram ( religious conduct ) . There are dhAnta aachAram

(Doctrinal approach to good religious conduct ) , which is established

over time as KulAchAram ( traditional approach practised by the austere

families) .

220) SrImathE Nama: Salutations to Lord Hayagrivan filled with the bliss

of auspiciousness .

221) SrIgirE nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , who is present as

the sacred veda Vaak (speech) .

222) Sriya: KaanthAya nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , the divine

consort

of SrI Devi !

229) SrithavathsalAya Nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , who has

the greatest affection for those , who have sought His refuge !

244-246) SathyAya Nama: , JN~AnAya Nama: , AnanthAya Nama:

Here is an Upanishadic salutation : " Satyam Jn~Anam anantham

BrahmA ". The essential nature (Svaroopam) of Brahman is Satya ( Real) ,

Jn~Ana ( Knowledge) and ananta (Infinite) . " Satyam-Jn~Anam Anantam

Brahma" is the LakshaNa Vaakyam for Brahman and it is saluted here thru

three contiguous HayagrIva Sahsra Naamams.

244) Brahman is saluted by BruhadAraNyaka Upanishad as " Satyasa Sathyam"

( Reality of the Real) . Brahman is understood here as "Satya " because

it is never subject to any kind of changes ( nirvikhAra Satya svaroopam) .

245) The Jn~Ana svaroopam of Brahman is understood as pure consciousness .

Different Upanishads describe the Jn~Anam in different and yet complimentary

ways . TaittirIyam states that Brahman possesses " knowledge as an attribute

( Jn~AnaguNakan). The extension of this definition is that Lord HayagrIvan

is

Sarvajn~an ( Omniscient) . BruhadAraNyam salutes Him as " Vijn~AthrA " .

That also means He is a Sarvajn~an and Jn~AnaguNakan. Jn~Anam combined

with Sakthi enables the Brahman to create this Universe of Naama-Roopa

form , indwellership in all created objects, niyanthA (controllership) of

them ,

nourishing the created objects and ultimately dissolving them .

246) Ananta means infinite and it denotes the inherent nature (Svaroopam)

and and distinguishing charactrestric of Brahman. Brahman as Ananta" is

infinite because of its omnipresence , it exists all the time and it

pervades all

the objects in the universe". Therefore HayagrIvan saluted by the NaamA of

Ananta is " infinite both with respect to Svaroopam and dharma".

250) BrahmamayAya Nama: Salutations to Lord HyagrIvan , who is

the embodiment of Brahman !

251) AchyuthAya Nama : Salutations to the Lord , who never fails

anyone , who has sought His refuge . AdiyArkaLai KaividAthavan .

He is Natha Sathyan . He is adiyavarkku Meyyan . In the very first

slOkam of His Achyutha Sathakam , Swamy Desikan appeals to

aasthikAs to prostrate before the eternal JyOthi , Achyuthan ,

who is forever true to His aasrithALs( Namatha ThridhsAnAm NaaTam

Sathyam DhAsAnAm Achyutham sTirajjyOthi: ) . He never lets down anyone ,

who has sought His protection thru Prapatthi . Therefore , He is known

as Achyuthan and DhAsa Satyan .

252) agrEbhavathE Nama: Salutations to the Lord , who appears before

the devotees , who perform japam on His Manthram andmeditate on Him .

This is exactly waht happened to Swamy Desikan on top of Oushadha Giri .

253) NagAya Nama: Salutations to the Lord in the form of the Mountain

( Oushadha Giri). It is customary for AzhwArs and AchAryAs to equate

the Lord to the mountain ( ThiruvEnkatam , Hasthi Giri ,

ThirumAlirumchOlai).

254) NithyAya Nama: Salutations to the Lord , who is eternal in existence .

255) ParamAya Nama: Salutations to Lord HayagrIvan , who is the Supreme

among gods ( Parama Purushan ).

256) PurushOtthamAya Nama: Salutations to the Lord , who is the Supreme

Self . He has full control over the Kshara( perishable ) Selves and the

freed selves (akshara). He is " the Supreme person because of His Supreme

greatness in being antagonistic to all that is evil and in being endowed

with auspicious attributes , which are different in kind from both the

perishable

and imperishable selves ". On entering the earth , PurushOtthaman upholds

all beings and nourishes all herbs (oushadhis) with His strength . About

Himself, Lord declares in the 15th slOkam of the 15th Chapter of GeethA

( PurushOtthma Yogam) that He is seated in the hearts of all . He says

further that

as PurushOtthaman, He controls the memory , Knowledge and their removal as

well .

He points out that He alone is the One to be known through all the VedAs and

that He

brings about the fruition of the rituals of the VedAs and He is the knower

of the

VedAs. Thus PurushOtthman identifies Himself as the Supreme Self (

ParamAthman).

257) YoganidhrAparAya Nama: Salutations to that Yoga HayagrIvan , who

is in Yoga SamAdhi , where He contemplates on the ways to save the Bhaddha

Jeevans from their sufferings . The archA Moorthy of Yoga Hayagrivan was

presented to Swamy Desikan by VyanathEyar on OushadhAdhri hills , That

ArchA Moorthy is still being worshipped at Thiruvaheendhrapuram .

258) SwAminE Nama: Salutations to HayagrIvan , who is the Master of All !

He is the Lord of All ! Swami also means spiritual perceptor , the Aadhi

Guru .

265-267) AanandhAya Nama: , SarvAn nandhayathE nama: , and AanandhinE

Nama: /// Here Sri HayagrIvan is saluted as the Bliss Principle (Aanandha).

Aanandham is both the Svaroopam and dharmam (distinguishing attributes).

He is the top of the Five kOsams as " aanandha maya kOsam " according to

TaitthirIya Upanishad. The Aanandha of Brahman is infinite bliss. Brahma

Soothram says in thsi context: " AanandhamayO abhyAsAth". The Upanishad

shows the identity of Brahman as Aanandham: " AanandhO BrahmEthi vyajAnAth".

266) SarvAn nandhayathE Nama: He is Raaman , abhirAman . He is JaganmOhanan.

He gladdens the heart of all , who has His darsana soubhAgyam . Through His

SarvAnga Soundharyam , Souseelyam , Soulabhyam and other KalyANa guNams ,

Lord HayagrIvan immerses His bhakthAs in an ocean of bliss .

267) AanandhinE Nama: Salutations to the Lord on Oushadha Giri , who derives

great joy in welcoming the SaraNaagathAs and confers sakala soubhAgyams on

them . Thirumangai salutes the Veda Moorthy as "yemakkum yeentharuLum

Yanthai ". The words "yeenthu aruLum " are a powerful set . They suggest

that

He confers on us the soubhAgyams that we asked for as well as those that

we did not even think about . Such is His oudhAryam and He takes a great joy

in

granting all those boons .
