LokAchAryar

Sri NampiLLai was continuing with the mission of our SrEvaishNavic

faith handed over to him by none other than Sri NanjEyar.

The day to day activites included inter-alia the elucidation of

thiruvoizmozhi -aruLIch-cheyal and related subjects, the daily

srEvaishNavic rituals and so on. Of course, the large following Sri

Nam-PiLLai resulted in the exclamation " Is this Nam-PerumAL ghOsthi

or Nam-PiLLai ghOsthi?"

The fame and name Sri Nam-PiLLai spread across the borders of chOzhA

kingdom. However, one soul did not like it in the innermost of his

hearts. Who was that? It was the grandson of Sri MudhaliANdAn -Sri

KandhADai ThOzhappar. Possessing a great lineage and lot of

knowledge, he, however did not like the fame and name attributed to

Sri Nam-PiLLai. In fact, he envied it to the core. Therefore, he

neither attended swAmy's ghOsthi nor liked it.

This latent hatred manifested in words of fire and detest in Sri

Nam-PerumAL sannidhi. Yes, one day Sri Nam-PiLlai was in the

sanctum-sanctorum of Sri Nam-PiLLai where Sri KandhADAi ThOzhappar

abused him relentlessly,ruthlessly and mercilessly.

Let us visualise the scenes after this spat.

Scene 1. Sri KandhADAi ThOzhappar thirumALigai: Realsing that her

barthA had committed an incorrigible crime, an unpardonable mistake,

an inexcusable blunder --bhAgawatha apachAram-Sri KandhADAi

ThOzhappar's dhEVigaL shuddered with fear and in no uncertain terms

pointed out his mistake. She educated him and made him realise that

ego has veiled his clear thinking and vision. This wrethched vice has

swallowed him comprehensively, she opined loudly and she struck work

in the thriumALigai having got frustrated from his omisions and

commissions.

Though being struck by such egoistic thoughts, Sri KandhADAi

ThOzhappar who was otherwise a learned scholar and hailing from a

respectable family the roots going up to the great dhASarathi, fell

into introspection on hearing the words of his dharma-pathini.

Realisation dawned on him. " AlAs! what a blunder I have committed.

This will lead me definitely do doom" ran his thoughts. Immedately,

he sought forgiving from his own wife. "Oh! Lord, You should retrieve

what you have lost, only from the place of loss. Forthwith, you should

seek the pardon of Sri Nam-piLLai" was her prescription. He requested

her to help him in this regard for which she consented. They commenced

their way towards Nam-piLLai and crossed their front door.

Scene 2: Front Door of Sri KaNdhADAi ThOzhappar ThirumALigai:

A person was lying in the front verandhAh, white cloth around his

head. "Who could this be ?" louldly asked Sri KandhADAi ThOzhappar. "

It is I sir, KalikanRi dASan' came the reply from none other than Sri

Nam-PiLLai.

"What brought you here?"-- and Sri Nam-PiLLai replied.

"It is my fault of having somehow sowed ill feeling about me into your

hearts which made you talk about me. Therefore, I thought I had no

refuge but your front door".

Sri KandhADAi ANDAn completely melted in this. The magnanimity was too much for him.

" Till date you had lot of disciples and were righteously conducting

our dharisaNam. From now on , you are not AchAryan for disciples but

for the whole world ... you are lOkAchAryAr." and fell surrendered at

his feet.

'thunnu pugazh kaNdAdhai thOzhappar tham vugappAl,

enna vulagAriyAnOA! enRuraikka, pinnai

vulagAriyan ennum peyar nam-piLLaikk Ongi,

vilagAmal ninRadhenRum mEAl' upadEsa rethninamAlai 51.
