Guest guest
Dear sri vaishNva perunthagaiyeer, Generally it is a practice by mothers to restrict the movements of children by advising them "hey dear, do not go there to that place east from here, ok, you can go to that place in the western direction from our house" etc, adding a little more to create a tinge of fear saying there lives a poochchaaNdi [witch], pEi [ghost] resides here etc. This applies specifically, to children below 10 years in age, that too, when it is sandhyaa kaalam, viz. the beginning of darkness in the evening [or when it is twilight and street lights are yet to be on]. Children are advised to remain in the house during that time by oldies of the house. There is a film song of yester years, in which the hero MG Ramachandhran, the former chief minister of tamilnadu, sings these lines - addressing the song to a child - "vEppa mara uchchiyil ninRu pEi oNNu aadudhunnu vedikkaiyaai solli vaippaanga unthan veeraththai viLaiyaattaai muLaiyileyE kiLLi vaippaanga". Meaning - in the younger days itself, you are threatened with sayings that there is a ghost atop the neem tree etc, thereby your courage and valour is decimated to naught at your tender stage. But if the child is a bit more naughty, like our pet child krishNa, then, he will do just the opposite to what he has been advised by mother. That is the nature of the children. The curiosity of checking why mother said so, what will happen if we do that? See here a krithi by ooththukkaadu venkata subbbu iyer [or OVS Mahaan as I referred earlier when I used his krithis] - wherein venkata kavi as mother yasOdhaa advises child Krishna, not to go to west direction but other three directions. Like periyaazhvaar, OVS also became mother to sing 'piLLaith thamizh'. [already we have seen few krithis which vouch for that qualification - of saying he is singing piLLaith thamizh - 1. adhbuthanaam baalakanaam - to praise krishNa's birth. 2. ThaayE yasOdhaa, illai illai ammaa, pEsaadhE pongaladi, - three krithis in which gopees complain about Krishna, krishNa's reply and then mother's judgement (?) - On the gOpee complaints and mother's reactions. 3. kaNNan's thirup palli ezhuchchi - waking up in the morning, 4. dhaModhara vaibhavam [to list a few] In the present krithi mother yasOdhaa [OVS] advises young krishNa not go to west, but take the other three directions. See here, mother saying to our kutty KrishNa "hey krishNa, we have already shifted from gOkulam to brindhaavanam just for your safety sake. So, you go any where in the other three directions than the west". Raagam: naattai thaaLam: aadhi thaaLam pallavi: sonnadaik kEL (ayyanE) kaNNaa, un thuRuthuRuththa vishamaththanam yaavaiyum maRandhu en sol uNarndhu naan -- sonnadaik kEL meaning: hey kaNNaa - krishNaa - please listen, oh, you naughty - please forget all your impish behaviour, realize the impact of my words and obey my words [advise]. anupallavi: munnam nam ooril gOkulaththil munaindhu unakku vandha idargaLai eNNi brindhaavanam idhil kudi pugha vandhOmE, gOpaalaa, vaLar iLa mathiyE, madhi mukha nidhiyE, enadhu udal uyirE, yadhukula nidhiyE, - sonnadaik kEL meaning: hey * gOpaalaa, our cowherd boy, * one having the face like the growing crescent moon, * the moon faced wealth of us, * my soulful child, * the affluence of yadhu clan, earlier in our place gOkulam you got lot of troubles, so we decided to reside here, by shifting, in this brindhaavaanam. As such please listen to what I say. charaNam: idar illaa ivvooril kizhakkilum theRkilum vadakkilum senRukoL, aanaal thavaRiyum kuda dhisai sellaadhE, gOpaalaa, angE kuRRamuLLa idam enum echcharikkai seidhEnE, pakshamuLLa endhan uyir achyuthanE inimElE - sonnadaik kEL meaning: hey gOpaalaa, achyuthaa, my dear life source, hereafter you can go to east, south, and north directions in this trouble free place [brindhaavanam]. But even by mistake, do not go to the place in western direction. I already have given you a warning that it is a dirty place [in that direction]. Comments: That much is the krithi. So, mother yasOdhaa is very clear in the warning - echcharikkai seidhEnE - or an advise (?) to young gopaalan - krishNan - that he cannot go to western direction. Why this command? For, in that place - there is a 'kuRRamuLLa idam' - a place full of bad things - bad people (?). when I refer back what is the kuRRamuLLa idam it is a naaRchandhi. Dear bhakthaas, You may ask "Any evidence or credence to that statement?" by OVS - and why you take it like that - any such incidence in bhaagavatham or aazhvaar paasurams? The answer is - Yes, please, see periyaazhvaar in his thirumozhi 2-8-2 and 2-8-6. So I take that as a naaRchandhi - a junction of 4 streets - and there resides [or stays] a black colour ghost having red hairs sent by the dirty kamsan, waiting to kill krishNa. Mother yasodhaa received information about that ghost and its stay there. kanRugaL illam pugundhu kadhaRuginRa pasu ellaam ninRu ozhindhEn unnaik koovi, nEsam onRum ilaadhaai, manRil nillEl andhip pOdhu, madhiL thiru veLLaRai ninRaai, nanRu kaNdaai endhan sollu, naan unnaik kaappida vaaraai. 2-8 2 periyaazhvaar meaning: [translation or meaning as given by our respected sri sadagopan of US quoted by sri madhavak kannan - taken from bhakti list archives sep 2002] Oh Lord presiding over Your divine residence surrounded by mighty walls at Thiru veLLarai! It is evening time. The kshudra (ugra) dhEvathaas are roaming around at the 4 corners of the street. Please do not go into the streets at this dangerous time. Please listen to my good counsel. You are not displaying any affection to me, not even that amount of affection shown by the calves towards their mothers. I am crying over Your safety and well-being at this delicate hour, like the cows missing their calves at evening time, when they want to shower their dear ones with nourishing milk flowing out of their full udders. Please do not get near the junction of the streets, where the 4 streets come together! Please come here, so that I can perform rakshai for you against these lurking evil spirits. point: please note that word "manRil nillEl" - in the 'andhip pOdhu' - manRil - is naarchandhi - a junction of road, that too in the sandhyaa kalam - 'andhip pOdhu' - see that command. 'endhan sollu nanRu kaNdaai' - says mother aazhvaar. "sonnadhik kEl" says OVS - substance is same, style is different. kanchan kaRukkoNdu nin mEl karu niRach chemmayirp pEyai vanchippadhaRku viduththaan enbadhu or vaarththaiyum uNdu manju thavazh maNi maada madhil thiru veLLarai ninRaai anjuvan nee angu niRka azhaganE, kaappida vaaraai. 2-8-6 meaning: Oh Lord of Thiru veLLarai presiding over Your lofty temple where the high clouds brush against! Please come from Your dhivya dhEsam to my side so that I can perform rakshai for You during this evening sandhi. I have heard that the evil Kamsan has ordered the red-haired black colour demon, to kill You by taking on the guise of a caring mother intent on breast feeding You! Hence I am frightened over Your standing at the junction of the 4 roads, where she is most likely to appear. Please stay away from there and let me perform mangaLa aaratthi for your rakshai. Please come here, so I can protect You, from these dangers. irukkodu neer sangiR koNdu ittu ezhil maRaiyOr vandhu ninRaar tharukkEl nambi sandhi ninRu thaai solluk koLLaai sila naaL thirukkaappu naan unnaich chaaththath thEsudai veLLarai ninRaai, urukkaattum andhi viLakku inRu oLi kola ERRugEn vaaraai. - 2-8-9 meaning: Oh Lord residing in the dhivya dhEsam populated by the righteous ones known for their austerities! Oh Lord, intent on performing pranks without cessation! Please do not go near the 4 junctions, where ugra dhEvathaas are assembled at their appointed hour of sandhyaa kaalam. Please listen to the words of your mother even for few minutes and pay heed! The brahmins have assembled here with holy water in their conches to perform rakshai for you through the recitation of Veda manthrams like purusha sooktham. Please accept the protection that they are offering you. I will also light the evening lamp, which will reveal further your incomparable beauty. Dear bhakthaas - is that krithi takes weight from the aazhvaar paasuram or not? Enjoy the krithi as well aazhvaar paasuram there by the transactions between kutty Krishnan and his mother.
