AchAryan -Sishyan 4

 

Recap: By acting with the mindset that actually he is an extension of

his AchAryaan and impart knowledge, the swaruPam of AchAryan

blossoms. By being merciful towards the disciple, the sishyan gets

himself retrieved and therefore, his swarUpam also blossoms.

 

 

Who is AchAryan?

 

Now a question arises. The oft repeated term here is AchAryan. Who is

AchAryan. One who imparts Wisdom? One who imparts mandhrangaL or one

who imparts upanishads/

 

An AchAryan may educate sishyan so many things.These mandhirams and

teachings should be aimed at getting relieved from samsAram. On the

contrary, there are so many mandhram-s whihc may in fact, encourage

samsaram. These are proscribed and disqualifies one to be an

AchArayan. The primary criteria thus, is the mandhiram which

dissuages one from being immersed in samsara and also helps in

escaping the bondage should be taught. As a logical extension, The

Thirumandhiram is the primary in this regards and Sri PiLlai

lOkAchAryar clearly states that

 

One who imparts knowledge of The Periya Thirumandhiram which is the

key to get oneself relieved from SamsAra, is the AchAryan,

 

"nEArEa AchAryan enbadhu- samsAra nivarthagamAna Periya

Thirumandhiram upadhEsithavanai" 316;

 

Though thre are some mandhiram-s even though directly pertaining to

EmperumAn, they may be aimed at other ends but will not detract one

from sasmsAram. For example those who are in materialistic pursuits

-gOpAla mandhiram is prescribed.For those who aim at children rAma

mandhiram is prescribed.Though these are also EmperumAn's

mandhiram-the one who educates this is not AchAryan as the

aforementioned criteria, namely the removal from samsAram is not

aimed at. ( Incidentally, it is also seen that EmperumAn bestows one

with the desired end-though materialistic)

 

Summary: The One who imparts knowledge overtly that this mandhiram is

aimed at relieving onesel from SamsAram -The Periya thriuamndhriam -

is AchAryan. Any other person, even though they educate with the

intention of other ends, though it is EmperumAn's thirunAmam cannot

be counted as AchAryan
