Guest guest
While visiting US from India, many of us come well equipped with Dharbai - bugnam. But at times we find short of the same and are not able to get it from know circles or temples. Can any of the learned scholars enlighten whether tarpanam can be done with "Ellu" without Dharbai. Guest guest
I have been faced with this situation quite a few times. My mother has told me that it is customary to use "korai pul," i.e. hard and long grass in place of dharba grass if the latter is not available. The dharba grass takes the form of seat and so long as the other grass is not really coarse, it should be alright. We find it in our backyard and it fits the bill. I have made five to six inch long pieces out of these and tied them up with the grass itself and used them in place of bugnams. A special gold ring made of gold wires woven together, given to me by my brother-in-law, is sufficient to substitute for the grass to be taken in the finger. I believe that the tharpanam done with earnest spirit with proper substitution will be accepted by our forefathers. Aravamudhan Raman aravaram "T. Guest guest
Respected Sir: Although this need not necessarily apply in your case, one is merely voicing one's concern. The most crucial pre-requisite is the Sandhya without which nothing moves literally. This writer has come across many instances when people comply meticulously to all the requirements as per Sastras, Sampradaya and the instructions of their Acharyas, but tend to either ignore or dilute the Sandhya requirement. Again, hope you do not take this amiss as being applicable to your case. The Sandhya is the sole 'enabling' factor which confers on the person the eligibility to do the tarpanam. Sandhya followed by Tarpanam in that order must be strictly adhered.
