Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

On this dheepaavaLi day, let me meditate on my krishNa, to shower his

blessings on all Sri vaishNavaas of the list. A krithi of

ooththukkaadu vEnkata subbu iyer, struck me today. That krishNa

bhaktha whose krithis strikes me many a times, like a lightning in my

eyes, and then makes me blind mentally for a while, but then leaves

me lifted up in krishNaa's thoughts. Since today's strike coincides

well with deepaavali, the festival of lights, I would like to share

with you all, that striking krithi. This krithi is on lord

varadharaaja of kaanchi but again his Krishna consciousness overtakes

the composer even though he starts on `hasthi giri eesan – varadhan'.

Raagam: kaambhOji

ThaaLam: aadhi thaaLam

pallavi:

kunRin mEl itta dheepam engaL kuRai enum

iruL pOkkum varadharaaja dheepam - kunRin

meaning: the lamp named varadharaaja is lit on the hill top - that

light which removes the darkness – the darkness of sins or wanting in

us.

anupallavi:

manRil maaNikka maragatha dheepam

engaL maadharasi dhEvaki ERRiya dheepam

meaning: the red ruby lamp or green emerald lamp is lit in a common

place – our empress lady dhEvaki lit that lamp means brought into

this world. [manRil is podhu idam – common place]

charanam:

navaneetham maNakka varum dheepam

naaradha gaanam kEttu thuLLi ezhum dheepam

kuvaLai malar neela dheepam

aayar kulam vaazha vandu ninRa

nalam tharum dheepam -- kunRin

avaiyilEp paanchaali azhaiththa dheepam

aayiram kOdi vaNNamaaip-pOi ezhundha dheepam

dhivi gaNa munivargaL kuviyum karam kaNdu

uvaghaiyoDu aruLum bhuvana dheepam

chiththamidai vandhu thava sudhDha saththuvam

kalandhu niththiyam idhai vazhangum aththi giri enum oru - kunRin

meaning: this lamp

§ comes smelling fresh butter,

§ jumps up on hearing rishi naaradhaa's singing

§ shines like that blossomed blue lily flowers

§ came here to enliven the vraja clan and offer welfare.

In the royal assembly paanchaali called this lamp

He went there as crores of colours – viz clothes of crores of colours

That worldly lamp raises to shower its grace on the meditating

assembly of rishis in the upper regions.

This lamp comes in the mind and shines as the clear blissful

philosophy – [sath chith aanandha roopam]. The lamp which grants

eternity is this one on the hasthi giri – varadharaja lamp.

Enjoy the krithi first and let us see some points on the krithi in

next post.
