Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

We are continuing the discussion - "is seethaa not capable of eliminating

raavaNa on her own?" We have seen that beautiful krithi of thyaagaraaja and

about the raagam selection. Now let us see the meaning and some points on the

krithi.

pallavi

sreekaantha neeyeda bala athi bala chelangaga lEdhaa vaadhaa

meaning: Oh consort of Lakshmi, were bala and athibala not with you in plenty?

Any doubt?

anupallavi

paakaari nutha neevaari balaabalamunu theliyaga lEdhaa

meaning: Oh Lord, praised by paaka + ari (paaka is a dhaithya slain by Indhra,

ari is enemy, so paakaari is one who is enemy of paaka viz. indhra), don't you

know the efficiencies and deficits of your subjects?

charaNam

kaaka dhaithyu nEka saramuna nEya kajja jaasthramai baraga lEdhaa

sreekara dhvijulai dhaari neruga lEni chintha neeku dhOchadhEmi

thyaagaraajanutha

meaning: You have done the deed of shooting an arrow at the kaakaasura (kaaka

dhaithyu nEka saramuna is to be split as kaaka + dhaithyun + Eka Saramuna) and

made him surrender to you. Oh Sreekara praised by thyAgarAja! Don't you feel

like thinking of dhvijas [the twice born] who don't know the right path?

Points on the krithi now:

1. Why this krithi is inserted here in the write up on is she capable or

not is that this krithi and the raagam selected by the poet thyaagaraaja suits

well to the context of the discussion happening between seethaa and hanumaan in

sundhara kaaNdam.

2. seethaa asks the question to hanumaan, as though she is asking raama,

her sree kaantha. Hey raama, are you not having the bala and athibala, the

manthraas which removes hunger, fatigue due to sleeplessness, etc given by sage

visvaamithra - this is a reaction when she heard raama is not eating nor

drinking nor sleeping - the slokams already quoted in previous posts - and

seethaa reacting to hanumaan as 'amrutham visha sampruktham'.

3. kaantha is husband, sreekaantha - is husband of mahaalakshmi - who else

except sriman naaraayaNa - mahaa vishNu who has now come as raama.

4. paakaari nutha neevaari balaabalamunu theliyaga lEdhaa - dear bhakthaas,

you may get a doubt when raama was praised by indhra. Yes please. The slOkams

are quoted here. These are just after thaatakaa vadham. Indhra not only praises

but also recommend raama may be given more.

thaam hathaam bheema sankaasaam dhrushtvaa surapathi: thadhaa || 1-26-26

saadhu saadhvithi kaakustham suraa: cha api abhipoojayan |

meaning: On seeing her who is horrendous in her shape is eliminated Indhra and

other gods have highly esteemed Raama saying, "admirable, admirable is this

act".

uvaacha parama preetha: sahasraaksha: purandhara: || 1-26-27

suraa: cha sarvE samhrushtaa visvaamithram atha abruvan |

meaning: The thousand eyed and the destroyer of enemy's citadels Indhra then

spoke with high satisfaction, and even all of the gods are gladdened and said to

Visvaamithra this way.

munE kausika bhadram thE saha indhraa: sarvE marudh gaNaa: || 1-26-28

thOshithaa: karmaNaa anEna snEham dharsaya raaghavE |

meaning: Oh, sage Visvamithra, you are blessed, all the groups of wind-gods

along with Indhra are pleased, so you please show more concern for Raaghava.

prajaapathE: krusaasvasya puthraan sathya paraakramaan || 1-26-29

thapO bala bhruthO brahman raaghavaaya nivEdhaya |

meaning: The sons of prajaapathi krusasva who are valiant by their virtue and

who possess ascetic strength, oh, Brahman, they may be offered to Raaghava.

[These are the sons like missiles of krishaashava prajaapathi. About them, the

divine weaponry and their birth, c.f. baalakaaNdam 21st sargam, verse 10 to 20

in valmikiramayan.net website].

5. So paakari the indhra has not only praised but also recommended that

raama be given weaponry. Seethaa also knows about these weaponry plus what

agasthya gave like Vishnu dhanus and pair of quivers etc, hence she reminds

raama on that.

6. Seethaa says, 'Oh raama, Since you have all that why are you not using

and rescue me, instead why you are suffering [even after having bhala and

athibala] as well make me suffer here 'amrutham visha sampruktham' - is the

point.

7. Then she pours out the kaakaasura story, which she and her husband only

know - which is now revealed to hanumaan as the evidence of he having met

seethaa.

8. This word sreekara is so apt here used by thyaagaraaja. Sri bhattar when

he comments on this naamaa in sri vishNu sahasra naama says "Sreekara: naamaa

no. 618 occurring in slokam 65 -- he who causes lakshmi to incarnate along with

him. lakshmi remains as his consort in his para aspect. Similarly he causes

lakshmi to incarnate as the corresponding consort also in his vyuha descents in

this world". By using this word sreekara, she also reminds raama through

hanumaan 'hey time has come for you to act' - the avathaara kaaryam.

9. In charaNam of the krithi - Now seethaa puts why you are not thinking

about dhvijaas who are not on the right path. Dhvija is a bird as well the

brahmaNa. Kaakaasuran is a dhvija who been set right. Similarly why are you not

setting right this dhvija. Raavana being the son of rishi visravas and since did

penance on brahma is considered as braahmaNa [(?) bhaagavathaas to comment on

this] so hey raama why are you thinking about brahmanaas who do not know right

path - who are thinking about other's wives. Means hey raama why you are not

taking action to rescue me from this raakshasa who makes me cry. [raavana the

very word means one who makes others cry].

10. To interpret in another way - paaka is cooking digestion assimilation.

Paaka ari means foe or enemy to digestion. This bala and athibala are enemy to

digestion - means when they are recited by one who knows the manthraas then

there is no hunger to him or her, thereby no need to eat, no need for any

digestion, assimilation etc. so this bala athibala are paakari. Seethaa says

when paakari is said or uttered or recited, then, oh raamaa, perhaps, your

subjects [like this hanumaan] do not know your strength and weakness. That is

why this hanumaan says like this that raama does not eat, drink or sleep.

With this I conclude this topic. Enjoy the krithi [can listen to the krithi in

karnatik.com website by choosing this krithi] and glory of seethaa and her

sreekaantha, the sreekara.
