SlOkam 36

MaahAthmyam Tava mahitham mAngaLikam

TuLasee-Kousthubha pramukhANAm

Achyutha sTira-vanamAlAm vathsam

darSayathi Lakshmee lakshaNa subhagam

(Meaning according to D.R.Swamy ) : The Lord's chest is the residing place

for many auspicious entities . First and foremost , it is MahA Lakshmi's abode.

Next , the subhalakshaNa Srivatsa (slOka 28 ante) adorns the chest . Tulasi

garland and Koustubha ratnam enhance its (chest's) beauty and auspiciousness .

The famous Vyjayanthy (Vana Maalaa) further enhances the glory of the Lord's

chest .

(Comments) :Oh Lord True to Your BhakthAs ! On Your chest coexist the auspicious

mole named Srivathsam and Periya PirAtti ; They add special beauty to Your

chest

through their presence . The TuLasi garland and Kousthuba gem become celebrated

objects through their association with Your sacred chest . The garland of forest

flowers is durably present on Your chest . Those who are fortuante to have

the Sevai of Your auspicious chest housing Periya PirAtti and all other MangaLa

vasthus recognize immediately that You are the SarvEswaran thru recognition of

these subha LakshaNams and eulogize You as JagannAthan .

nirvisathy gacchath taapO dEvajanO DevanAyaka Vidhi pramukha:

SeethaLa sAndhrabhUthAm chAyAm tava vipulaBAhu kalpa dhrumANAm

(Meaning according to D.R.Swamy ): DevanAyaka! The groups of DevAs

headed by Brahma and others enjoy the vast , cool shade of the boon-granting

kalpaka tree in the form of Thy broad shoulders.

(Comments) : Lord's Strength associated with His arms is saluted here .

The famous lines from Srimath RaamAyanam are invoked here by

D.R.Swamy : " BaahucchAyAm avashtabhya Yasya lOka:MahAthmana: " .

Lord Ramachandran's powerful shoulders serve as the comforting

shade of the munificent Kalpaka tree for the distressed people of the world.

Besides protecting the ones suffering from SamsAric tApams , they serve

also as the boon-granting Kalpaka tree .

In another place in Srimath RaamAyaNam , Minister Sumantra returns

to AyOdhya after saying good bye to Raama, SithA and LakshmaNa in

the forest . Sumantra assures the worried King DasaraTaa and Queen

Kausalyaa that there is no potential for danger to SithA from the wild

animals and other dangers of the forest since RamachandrA's mighty

shoulders will be protecting Her : " naahArayasi santhrAsam Baahu

Raamasya samSrithA " .

The Bhuja Bala parAkramam of Sri Raama is celebrated here . Raghu Veeran's

vaibhavam is hinted here . Your arms provide the cool and comforting shade

like the Kalpaka tree for those suffering from the SamsAric taapams. Both

the Kalpaka tree and the Lord's shoulders grant boons .There is a difference

between the two in boon granting capabilities . Kalpaka tree can not grant

the boon of Moksham , which the Lord alone can bless one with .

sankalpa chandra kshOpitha thriguNOdhadhi vipula BhudhBhudha prakarai:

BrahmANDairapi bharitham Kimkara-sathya Tava kasmAnnu kruSamudharam

(Meaning according to D.R.Swamy ) :Kinkara Satya! The big ocean of Prakriti

is stirred to its depths by Thy sankalpa (will) which is like the Moon which

stirs

up seas . The various BrahmANDAs appear therefore like huge bubbles from

there . Though Your stomach contains them all , how does it happen that that

stomach

of Thine is still slim and lean ?

(Comments): Oh Lord ! It is a mystery that Your stomach is very slim inspite of

holding mighty BrahmANDams inside it . Your sankalpam is like the Full Moon

that stirs up the big ocean of Prakruthi made up of the three guNams ( Satthva,

Rajas and Tamas) . From that ocean of Prakruthi stirred up by Your sankalpam

arise many universes . They are like the bubbles with finite life . During the

time

of deluge ,You protect them inside Your stomach . The presence of such huge

BrahmANDams inside Your stomach should make the latter look big and bloated.

It is a miracle that Your stomach still looks thin and slender like some one ,

who has been fasting for a long time . How does one account for this ?

nAbhiruhamTava naLInam BhujagEswara nakara NaaTa sObhathE subhagam

madhyasTitha Brahma bramaram vathsAsana Lakshmee paadha peeDa sadhruksham

(Meaning according to D.R.Swamy) : AhindrapuranATa ! The lotus that emerged from

Thy navel having a lovely bee at its center in the form of Brahma , shines as

the foot

rest ( Paadha Peetam) for Lakshmi seated on Thy chest .

(Comments) : Swamy Desikan as a poet excels here with a new idea . Lakshmi

has been saluted by other poets as Padhma Hasthaa , PadhmAkshi , PadhmAlayA

etc., In this slOkam , Swamy Desikan visualizes Her as "Padhma Paadha Peetaa",

the One adorning the Lotus on which Brahma sits as a foot rest . That Padmam

arises from the navel of the Lord ( PadmanAbhan) and MahA Lakshmi's foot

rests there .

dhruDa peeDitha Madhu-KaiDabha SONItha paDala paripADalAmBhara gaDithA:

rAjathyachyutha mukharaa RaTinATa gajEndhra srunghalaa Tava raSanaa

( Meaning according to D.R.Swamy ): Achyutha ! By the profuse blood gushing

from the asurAs Madhu and Kaitabha, whom Thou didst crush, Thy peethAmbhara

became very red .The waist ornament worn on that with its jingling gems shines

as a chain tying up the elephant , Cupid the god of love (who works havoc into

numerous hearts ) .

(Comments) : PeethAmbhara seen on the Lord's waist normally has a captivating

golden yellow color . Here Swamy Desikan sees a red colored "peethAmbharam " .

Swamy reflects for a second on the reason for the variation in the hue and

figures

out that very red color came from the Lord crushing Madhu and Kaitabhan to death

between His thighs and the ensuing gushing of their blood dyed the yellow cloth

and made it bright red .

Swamy enjoys the sound of the waist band holding the PethAmbharam of the Lord.

That ornament has small bells attached to it and raises a SunAdham as the Lord

moves about .Swamy Desikan says that those who are priveleged to listen

to this auspicious naadahm will never fall prey to worldly pleasures , which

act a sa wild elephant .
