Guest guest
Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, Continuing the discussion on the observation of 'protocol' by raama, we will now see how raama has NOT observed any protocol in meeting sage sutheekshna like while meeting sage bharadhwaaja and sarabhanga [but observed the protocol on the occasion of meeting sage agasthya]. raama: thu sahitha: bhraathraa seethayaa cha paranthapa: | sutheekshNasya aasrama padam jagaama saha thai: dhvijai: || 3-7-1 Meaning: Raama, the enemy-scorcher, has gone towards the threshold of the hermitage of Sage SutheekshNa along with his brother LakshmaNa and Seethaa, also along with those Brahmans who accompanied him all the way. Point 1: Next 3 slOkams describe how raama traveled - meaning of slOkams alone given here as - He, traveling on a long way, and on crossing rivers with plenty of waters has seen a tranquil mountain towering like great Mt. Meru. Then those best ones from Ikshvaku dynasty, those two Raaghavaas along with Seetha have entered the forest, which will always be full with diverse trees. Entering that perilous forest with its many a flower and fruit bearing trees, they have seen the hermitage in a reclusive place adorned with rows of jute cloths as though garlanding it. [3-7-2, 3, 4] thathra thaapasam aaseenam mala paNkaja dhaariNam | raama: sutheekshNam vidhivath thapOdhanam abhaashatha || 3-7-5 meaning: There on seeing the ascetically rich Sage SutheekshNa sitting in yogic posture with his body bearing lotus-like blotches of soil, Raama dutifully spoke to him. [3-7-5] point 2: see here - straightaway raama sees the sage, goes to him, and talks to him. No protocols, no assistants like lakshmaNa going and informing arrival of raama to the sage seeking his permission etc. raamO~aham asmi bhagavan bhavantham dhrashtum aagatha: | thath maa abhivadha dharmajna maharshE sathya vikrama || 3-7-6 meaning: Oh! godly sage I am Raama, I have come to see you, oh, knower of virtue, oh, great sage, oh, one with truthfulness as your courage, please talk to me." Point 3: See again no protocols in seeing another great rishi athri - husband of anasooya to whom seethaa describes her marriage. [in which description the point of raamaa did not agree for marriage till his father gave the consent is told]. thasmaadh anyathra gachchhaama ithi samchinthya raaghava: | praathishtatha sa vaidhEhyaa lakshmaNEna cha samgatha: || 2 -109 - 4 meaning: [after bharatha left with sandals and after performing the religious rites for deceased father dhasaratha] raaghava thought - 'let us go to some other place' - and then proceeded with vaidhEhee and lakshmaNa. sO~athrEr aasramam aasaadhya tham vavandhE mahaa yasaa: | tham chaapi bhagavaan athri: puthravath prathyapadhyatha || 2-109- 5 meaning: On reaching the aasramam of sage athri, these two famed ones bowed to the sage athri. The sage also received raama as if he is his own son. svayam aathithyam aadhisya sarvam asya susathkrutham | soumithrim cha mahaabhaagaan seethaam cha samasaanthvayath || 2-109 - 6 meaning: raaghava on his own had the hosting at the [athri's] aasramam. Soumithree and seethaa also had taken rest on their own. Point: In the aasramam of sage athri raama behaved, as though he is the son of athri and as such there is no question of any protocol. Now it is made very clear in that particular instant of raama meeting sage agasthya he observed protocol. Similarly in kishkindha kaaNdam [later], raama observes the protocol in meeting sugreeva, which all know - viz- since sugreeva was afraid he sends his assistant and minister hanumaan to find out who these two are. Then lakshmaNa as advised by raama spoke to the minister hanumaan who in turn made the meeting of raama and sugreeva successful leading to the forging of a treaty of friendship. With this, before concluding, I repeat the question what is so special to agasthya to observe the protocol which raama did not observe with others. Any comments please? Dhasan Vasudevan m.g.
