Guest guest
om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya Dear Taina, I will also go to Tiru for the first two November weeks, having never been in India before. So all will be quite new here Yes, I also heard some warning stories, that the town is a little bit "crazy", traffic terrible etc. - but nevertheless, if we go there we are in Sri Ramana's hand - so of course we take some care - but He also will have a watchful eye. Travelling for this purpose we are in His fold. Enjoy your prolonged stay there - how fortunate you are! Possibly we will meet there and go together round the hill. Some others here from this group have been there - and possibly will say something about. Guest guest
Dear Tania , if you arrive or start from Chennai Airport then let the Ashtam know the flight no. or time and they will send a taxi monitored by them to collect you .This is cheaper, safer and more efficient than hiring one yourself, you could be overcharged .Buses are very difficult and trains unreliable .Nothing to worry about in the Ashram-good security .They advise guests on what to avoid .Only buy fruit with a peel on it outside , eat cooked food in restaurants and never have a raw salad out .Only drink mineral water or Ashra, purified water .I expect others will give you tips -but have no fears , hand them over to Arunachala .Regards Alan --- Gabriele Ebert <g.ebert wrote: > om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya > > > Dear Taina, > > I will also go to Tiru for the first two November weeks, > having never been in India before. Guest guest
Hi Tania/Gabriele Be prepared for the sheer number of people, right from the Airport itself, the hustle and bustle, the jostling. And the dirt. And the noise. Alan has given some excellent advices. Take medicines with you which have suited you in the past, for stomach ache, fever, malaria, etc. Take some effective mosquito repellant creams. Change your currency only at official exchange bureaus. The US dollar should fetch you around 47 Indian rupees , the Euro around Rs 50. For anything quoted to you, never accept it on face value, whether it is taxi ride or for buying a shawl. Have copies of your passport, travel documents and ID in a separate place. Chennai will be hot and humid, so advise cotton clothes. And wish you a discovery of the real India, behind the chaos. - Alan Jacobs RamanaMaharshi Saturday, September 20, 2003 05:30 PM Re: [RamanaMaharshi] trip to Tiru Dear Tania , if you arrive or start from Chennai Airport then let the Ashtam know the flight no.or time and they will send a taxi monitored by them to collect you .This is cheaper, safer andmore efficient than hiring one yourself, you could be overcharged .Buses are very difficult andtrains unreliable .Nothing to worry about in the Ashram-good security .They advise guests on whatto avoid .Only buy fruit with a peel on it outside , eat cooked food in restaurants and never havea raw salad out .Only drink mineral water or Ashra, purified water .I expect others will give youtips -but have no fears , hand them over to Arunachala .Regards Alan --- Gabriele Ebert <g.ebert (AT) gmx (DOT) de> wrote: > om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya> > > Dear Taina,> > I will also go to Tiru for the first two November weeks,> having never been in India before. Guest guest
Dear Gabriele: I drew up a map of the area around Sri Ramanasramam. You can see it by clicking this link: http://uarelove1.tripod.com/MAP_RAMANASRAMAM.doc My recommendation for anyone visiting Tiruvannamalai for the first time, is to print the Map and the four pages of directions and take them with you to Tiruvannamalai. To download the map, it is best to save it as a Microsoft Word document. That way the Map keeps its correct shape. I wanted to put the Document in the Files section here at the Ramana Maharshi group, but when I click on files I do not see any buttons to click to add a file. Maybe someone else can add it for me. I see that I have put a document there in the past, but now I don't see how it is done. Take care, with Love, Michael L. Guest guest
I tried clicking the link for the Map in the Last message I posted, and the link does not work. Below I have made the corrections for how to access the Map: RamanaMaharshi, "uarelove" <uarelove> wrote: > Dear Gabriele: > > I drew up a map of the area > around Sri Ramanasramam. > > You can see it by clicking this link: > http://uarelove1.tripod.com/STD8.htm then scroll down to Sri Ramana Community and click the "SRI RAMANASRAMAM NEIGHBORHOOD" link. Another way to see the Map and directions is to click: SriArunachala/ then look left and click "Files". Then click: MAP RAMANASRAMAM.doc. > > My recommendation for anyone > visiting Tiruvannamalai for the first time, > is to print the Map and the four pages of directions > and take them with you to Tiruvannamalai. > > To download the map, > it is best to save it as a Microsoft Word document. > That way the Map keeps its correct shape. > > I wanted to put the Document in the Files section > here at the Ramana Maharshi group, > but when I click on files I do not see any buttons to click > to add a file. > > Maybe someone else can add it for me. > I see that I have put a document there in the past, > but now I don't see how it is done. > > Take care, > > with Love, > > Michael L. > > RamanaMaharshi, "Gabriele Ebert" > <g.ebert@g...> wrote: > > > > I will also go to Tiru for the first two November weeks, > > having never been in India before. Guest guest
Dear Taina & all I have traveled quite a lot around the world and I can tell you that India is a wonderful place to visit. I have had the most interesting experiences during my three trips in India. Yes there are good and bad things...as everywhere else. I would suggest you not to dwell on other people's bad travel experiences which can be only the result of some past karma. Please remember that Arunachala is a "wish fulfilling" hill.....Just keep very positive things in your heart and only positive things will happen to you. I have spent 5 wondeful months in Tiruvannamalai (2 weeks at Ramanasramam, 5 weeks at Seshadri ashram and the rest in a rented house). During these 5 months, I have established some key contacts that helped to make my life easy: drivers (taxi & rickshaw), food, restaurants for foreigners, laundry, doctors (siddha medecine and other), bank, yoga teacher, guides, etc. Please write directly to my personal email address if you need some names and contacts. During my stay, I have tried not to stay only with westeners. I wanted to experience the South Indian culture. I have tried to establish good relationships with many "locals" (family, young people, sadhus, beggars, etc.). I have learned so much from them. Most of them are not well educated but they have so much heart. I often realised that all these people came on my path because of past karma..... As anywhere else, we cannot trust everybody.... I just followed my heart. I have tried to always see the people I met in Tiruvannamalai as Arunachala's people. He accepts ALL....Amazing! As preparation, the informations given by Michael L (Uarelove) are very good. I just want to specify that the Ramana Supermarket is now located just in front of the Ramanasramam. Next, there is also an internet shop. I would like to add that when I was there (Feb to July 2003), there was no ATM bank machine in Tiruvannamalai. We had to go to Pondycherry to get cash machines (3 hours drive) Please do not hesitate to contact me if you want further information. I might meet with you as I intend to return next December. Enjoy your trip in Tiruvannamalai. OM Arunachala! Guest guest
Hi Jacqueline, are you still in Tiru? Just re-read your mailing. Here the journey is coming nearer. Next Friday I should sit in the air-plane - such a strange feeling. Taina, whom I wanted to meet - has got an infection and is not able to travel. In His Grace Gabriele This is off-list.
