Dear Alan,

The Friend to his friend: Love me, love me alone. Love yourself in me, in me

alone. Attach yourself to me, No one is more inward than I. Others love you for

their own sakes, I love you for yourself. And you, you flee from me. Dearly

beloved! ... if you approach me, It is because I have approached you.

I am nearer to you than yourself, Than your soul, than your breath. Who among

creatures Would treat you as I do? I am jealous of you over you, I want you to

belong to no other, Not even to yourself. Be mine, be for me as you are in me,

Though you are not even aware of it.

Dear Alan,

It is written by Ibn Arabi, the medieval Muslim mystic/theologian. He mixes both

jnana marga and bhakti marga into his own special brand of "blood red wine of

ecstasy".

Alan are you are aware that we met in Ramanashramam in May? We met only for a

couple of minutes. I would like to share two events that occurred during my

stay and I will never forget them.

Most of the time I spend in the old hall or at the teastall outside...It was

very crowded in the ashram at the time.

On one occasion I decided to climb to the top of the hill; half way my climb I

really panicked because of the heat and I was not sure I had enough water with

me to cool my head and keep my body hydrated, I was severely sweating and

loosing a lot water. I was all alone except for a monkey clan that was watching

my rather clumsy moves with lots of monkey-laughter. My heart was pumping and I

nearly fainted. Still I continued the climb and made it to the top. On the top

I found a little cave and I went inside to protect myself from the heat of

noon. I could see the old temple from there and the view was spectacular. There

was also a green and yellow lizard(?) watching me all the time. We stood there

for a long time staring at each other.

There were some young Indian devotees of a baba up the hill and they shared some

bread and tea with me. It turned out I took the steep climb and there was

another path that I could have taken that was less steep.

They also accompanied me on the way back. Clouds rolled before the sun and a

cool wind chased the heat away. Later that night it would storm and rain. This

was the day before I left.

When I arrived in Tiru and the ashram I met an Indian fellow and we both agreed

to circumbulate Arunachala. He told me to go bare footed so I did.

When we were approaching the town again suddenly a violent rainstorm rose and

blew us inside a little temple where arati or some kind of service was being

performed. The devotees were very friendly and asked us to circumbulate the

idol (was it Ganesh?, I really don't remember) inside three times and we were

offered prasad by a devout lady devotee. After the rainstorm was over we

continued our way back to the ashram but the water in the streets made it

impossible to see where I was stepping in. I didn't want to get hurt so I

decided to take a riksja back to the ashram where my girlfriend was waiting. I

was afraid she would be upset because I stayed away much longer then

anticipated.

Anyway, I felt the circumbulation was complete the moment we were literally

blown into to that little temple.

I offered my Indian companion dry clothes for his bus journey back home that

night but he wouldn't accept it. He said I was a guest in his country and he

could not accept it. He also had not much money to spend but still he insisted

he would pay for everything (chai and some snacks). He just wouldn't let me pay

or do anything in return! That was very humbling. He said goodbye soaking wet

and there was nothing I could do.

You know, whatever situation we were in during our travelling through India

people always would show up unexpected and offer us all the help we needed. I

always felt that Sri Ramana was there to take care of us and make sure we would

return home safely.

Ben.
