indriyANi parANyAhurindrayebhyah param manah |

manasas tu parAbuddhiryo buddheh paratastu sah ||

(3.42) 22

It is said that the power of the senses is great; higher than the senses is the

mind; higher than the mind is the intellect; but higher still, than the

intellect, is He ...[the Self].

evam buddheh param buddhvA samstabhyAtmAnamAtmanA |

jahi Satrum mahAbAho kAmarUpam durAsadam ||

(3.43) 23

Thus now knowing Him (the Self) to be higher than the intellect, fixing the self

in the Self, O Mighty-armed One, slay the elusive enemy (ahamkAra) so hard to

find.

---

The Self uses intellect, through the mind and senses, for measuring variety.

Intellect is an instrument of the Self. The Self alone is eternal.
