Dear Friends, I have received the following e mail from Sri V.Ganesan ,which I

pass on [personal

bits edited out].Regards, Alan

> Namaskar.

>

> Thank you for a lovely evening-gathering at 'Ananda Ramana' of serious and

> sincere seekers ! A. Ramana seated next to me was a great boon to me, since I

felt a 'healing'

> force was emanating from him and entering me; and, thus giving me a

therapathic fermentation !

> I thank you, dear Ramana and every member who chose to be with me, last

evening ! It was a true

> and

> powerful 'Sat-Sangh', indeed !

>

> * * * * * * *

>

> There was guidance from within that I should share with you all an important

aspect in the

> spiritual growth of each one of us. Hence, I was induced to talk on JNAPTI

and PRAJNA. I want

> to 'share' with you, 'further' in this regard.

>

> When Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj was asked: "What is the difference between

> 'Awareness' and 'Consciousness' ?" pat came his reply: "When 'Awareness

> catches hold of an object [it can be a subjective 'thought' also] it becomes

> 'Consciousness' !" This was a thrilling 'revelation' to me, years back !

>

> Then, I came to know about the 'Ramakrishna Swami episode'. When this

dedicated worker (in the

> Ashram store) was attacked by epileptic fits, he was

> being carried from the stores to the Ashram Dispensary. They carried him in

> front of the "Old Hall" where Sri Bhagavan was seated. Bhagavan took efforts

to look through

> the window at the carried body. After a few days, when Ramakrishna Swami was

completely cured,

> he came and prostrated in front of Sri Bhagavan at the 'Old Hall'. Bhagavan

asked him :

> "Ramakrishna ! How did you feel during the whole course ?" He replied: " I

did not know

> anything, Bhagavan ! I was completely in unconsciousness !" Bhagavan was

quick enough to

> respond : "That should not be, Ramakrishna ! Even in total uncon-sciousness

(non-prajna state),

> you should have held on to your 'Jnapti' !

> One may remain without 'prajna'; but, one should never lose hold of 'Jnapti'

!"

> [ Jnapti = Awareness per se. Prajna = Consciousness ]

> I was searching for a scriptural confirmation [not that Sri Bhagavan's holy

words need any

> confirmation, but for my own satisfaction] about this special powerful 'word'

used by our

> Beloved Master ["Jnapti"]. I felt it should have been used by ancient

'rishis' as well. Soon

> it was 'revealed' to me.

>

> The story of 'Muchukunda' :---

>

> King Muchukunda was a great Yogi. Yet, eventhough he was practising many yoga

sadhanas, he

> could not realise the Self. His valour was so famous that the 'Devas'

[celestial beings] took

> him to heaven to fight on their side to defeat the demonoic forces. He

vanquished the entire

> demon forces. Devas, pleased with him offered to give him a boon. Muchukunda

asked

> 'Self-Realisation' as his boon. The Devas admitted that they did not have the

power to confer

> on anyone 'Self-Realisation' and that the Lord alone was capable taking the

form of a 'Guru'.

> Since he did not want any more to deal with the world, he got the boon of

'sleeping' till the

> Lord appeared before him and granted him 'Self-Realisation'. For ages,

Muchukunda was lying

> sleeping inside a cave. Lord Krishna was born and years passed by. Once, the

Lord reached inside

> the cave and Muchukunda woke up. Seeing the Lord standing in front of him, he

started hailing

> Him, worshipping Him, with 57 verses ! When I read the last verse, I was

thrilled !

>

> "So, O Lord ! Having given up entirely the

> desire for boons which actually bind one

> nature is 'Niranjanam' - blemishlessness,

> 'Nirgunam' - one who is beyond all gunas,

> 'Advayam' - one who is non-dual, 'Param' -

> one who is in the all-perceived things and

> 'Jnapti Mathram' - one who is of the nature

> of Pure Awareness [per se]."

> An Interlude: Recently, when I was in Apollo Hospital, I was knocked off with

very heavy

> sedations for four days. Before I was administered this soul-shattering drug,

I prayed to Sri

> Bhagavan to be with me, revealing His True Nature [i did not pray for

protection or mere

> company]. Bhagavan, through the eyes of Anu Ma, whom I saw last before being

dragged into the

> operation theatre, poured into me, like 'Two Brilliant Lights' entered into my

Heart. I was

> thrilled ; and, refused to open my eyes after that, though inside the theatre

the Doctors [i

> don't know why] wanted me to open my eyes. All

> the four 'unconscious' days, I experienced JNAPTI = His Presence as

> Pure Awareness per se ! I then recognised, that statements from Sages and

> Scriptures are not mere 'statements', but truly "STATES", experienceable by

> any serious and sincere seeker !

> Now, I want to share with you, another remarkable 'Saint Story', with my own

> explanation of revealing the glory and true significance of 'Jnapti' :--

>

> " The story of Saint Nam Dev, Bhagavan frequently refers to with approval.

That day, he narrated

> it to Dr.Srinivasa Rao: "Vithoba [at Pandarpur, the temple idol is of Lord

Vishna, with that

> Name]. Nam Dev and Vithoba used to play, talk, joke, like real friends [He

animated from the

> idol, whenever Nam Dev called out for Him]. Vithoba found Nam Dev had not yet

realised the

> Supreme Truth [self] and wanted to teach him. When Jnaneswa [another glorious

Saint] and Nam Dev

> returned from their pilgrimage, Gora Kumbhar [another ripened Sage, though

illeterate and a

> potter by profession] gave a feast to all the Saints in his place and among

them were Jnaneswar

> and Nam Dev. At the feast, Jnaneswar in collusion with Gora, told Gora

publicly, 'You are a

> potter, daily engaged in making pots and testing them to see which are

properly baked and which

> are not. These pots before you [the Saints]

> are the pots of the Creator [brahma]. See which of these are sound and which

are not'. Gora

> took up the stick, with which he used to beat the pots to find out whether

they are well baked,

> tapped each one on the head. Each guest humbly submitted to such tapping.

When Gora approached

> Nam Dev, the latter indignantly called out :"You potter, what do you mean by

coming to tap me

> with that stick ?' Gora thereupon told Jnaneswar, 'Swami, all the other pots

have been properly

> baked. This one [Nam Dev] alone is not yet properly baked !' All assembled

burst out laughing.

> Nam Dev felt greatly humiliated and ran up to Vithoba with whom he was on the

most intimate

> terms, playing with him, eating with him, sleeping with him, and so on. Nam

Dev complained of

> his humiliation, which had happened to him, the closest friend and companion

of Vithoba. Vithoba

> [who of course knew all these] pretended to sympathise with him, asked for all

the details of

> the happenings at Gora's house and after hearing everything, said, 'Why should

you not have kept

> quiet and submitted to the tapping, as all others did ? That is why all this

trouble has come.'

> Thereupon Nam Dev cried all the more and said, 'You also want to join the

others and humiliate

> me. Why should I have submitted like the others ? Am I not your closest

friend, your child ?'

> Vithoba said, 'You have not yet properly understood the Truth. And you

wouldn't understand it

> if I tell you. But go to the Saint who is in a ruined temple in such and such

a forest. He

> will be able to give you Enlightenment.'

>

> Nam Dev accordingly went there and found an old, unassuming man sleeping in a

corner of the

> temple with his feet on a Siva Linga. Nam Dev could hardly believe this was

the man from whom

> he - the companion of Vithoba - was to gain Enlightenment. However, as there

was none else

> there, Nam Dev went near the man and clapped his hands. The old man woke up

with a start and,

> seeing Nam Dev, said, 'Oh,you are Nam Dev whom Vithoba has sent here. Come !'

Nam Dev was

> dumb-founded and began ro think, 'This must be a great man.' Still he thought

it was revolting

> that any man, however great, should be resting his feet on a Linga. He asked

the old man, 'You

> seem to be a great personage. But,is it proper for you to have your feet on a

Linga ?'

> The old man replied, 'Oh, are my feet on a Linga ? Where is it ? Please

remove my feet

> elsewhere.' Nam Dev removed the feet and put them in various places.

Wherever they were put,

> there arose a Siva Linga there !

> Finally, he took them on his lap and he himself became a Siva Linga. Then

> he realised the Truth. The old gentleman told him, 'Now, you can go home !'

>

> Bhagavan added,"It is to be noted that only when he surrendered himself, and

touched the feet of

> his Guru, Enlightenment came. After this final Enlightenment, Nam Dev

returned to his house and

> for some days did not go to Vithoba at the temple, though it had been his

habit not only to

> visit Vithoba every day, but to spend most of his time with Vithoba at the

temple. So, after a

> few days, Vithoba went to Nam Dev's house and like a guileless soul enquired

how it was that Nam

> Dev had forgotten him and never visited him. Nam Dev replied, 'No more of

your fooling me. I

> know now. Where is the place where you are not ! To be with you, should I go

to the temple ?

> Do I exist apart from you ?' Then, Vithoba said, "So, you now understand the

Truth. That is

> why you had to be sent for this final lesson.' "

> In the state of 'prajna', you can 'see' God, 'play' with HIm, 'eat' with Him;
