Guest guest
Inspired by the wonderful poetry posted on the forum by Ben, and the message from Sri Ganesan relayed by Alan, I feel like sharing some words and quotes from Baba Muktananda's book, "Where are you going?": "He is the real Guru Who can reveal the form of the formless before your eyes Who teaches the simple path, without rites or ceremonies Who does not make you close your doors, and hold your breath, and renounce the world Who makes you perceive the supreme Spirit wherever the mind attaches itself Who teaches you to be still in the midst of all your activities Fearless, always immersed in bliss he keeps the spirit of yoga in the midst of enjoyments" -- Kabir "That which is not thought by the mind but by which the mind thinks -- know that as the Absolute." -- Kenopanishad "...do not try to impose any conditions on your meditation. Simply turn your attention within and meditate on the knower who is always aware. Do not worry if your mind spins. So many clouds come and go in the sky, but the sky remains pure; it is not affected by the clouds. In the same way, when thoughts arise and disperse in the mind, the Self is not disturbed by them. If you can, clear your thoughts away. If you cannot, try to perceive the witness of those thoughts. If you focus on that witness, the thoughts will calm down on their own." -- Muktananda on page 103 "One's own thought is one's world. What a person thinks is what he becomes -- That is the eternal mystery. If the mind dwells within the supreme Self, One enjoys undying happiness." -- Maitri Upanishad "O man, you have roamed so much in the outer world. You have gone from one place to another, You have picked flowers and fruit and pursued countless activities, But all you have earned is weariness. Now it is time to soar in the boundless inner spaces. What you are seeking can be found there in its fullness." -- unnamed poet-saint of Maharashtra quoted on page 11 "God Has Never Left the Heart. In India there lived a great Sufi named Hazrat Bayazid Bistami. When he was young, Bistami set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca. On his way, he came upon a dervish, an ecstatic being. "Where are you going?" the dervish asked. "To Mecca," Bistami replied. "Why?" "To see God." "How much money do you have?" "Four hundred gold dinars." "Give them to me," said the dervish. He took the money and put it in his pocket. Then he said, "What will you do in Mecca? You will simply walk around the sacred rock seven times. Instead of doing that, walk around me seven times." Bistami did as he was told. "Now you can leave," the dervish said. "You have achieved your purpose. But first let me tell you something. Since the day Mecca was built, God has never dwelled there, but since the heart was created, God has never left it. Go home and meditate." -- page 30 "With the sweetness of my chanting, I will make the knowers of the Truth drool. I will bring great yogins out of Samadhi, I will make pilgrims desert the holy places. As I chant, I will make my own body the embodiment of love. Through the glory of my chanting, my entire being will become the Absolute." -- Saint Tukaram quoted on page 96 "Naa Shivam Vidyate KvaChit: Nothing exists that is not Shiva." -- Kashmirir Shaivism quote on page 120 "Do not think God is only in your heart. You should be able to recognize Him in every garden, in every forest, in every house, and in every person. You should be able to see Him in your destination, in all stages of your journey, and in all your fellow pilgrims. You should be able to see Him on every path, in every philosophy, and in every group. You should be able to see Him in all acts, in all deeds, in all thoughts and feelings, and in all expressions of them. You should be able to recognize Him not only in inner lights, but also in the lights you see in the outer world. All colors and even the darkness are the same Being. If you really love Him, if you want to find His Love and be blessed by it, then see Him in every corner of the universe." -- Sufi saint Shams-i-Tabriz quoted on page 162, last page of the book
