Guest guest
Being a new entrant, I have not gone through the earlier postings to verify if conversations with His Holiness Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Swaminah of Sringeri Sharada Peetham were already there. If this is a repetition, please excuse me. With best wishes, Nagaraja The Guru is everlasting If as a result of listening to so much of upadesa you now feel that from tomorrow you are going to miss your Guru, then I must say that both of us have wasted so many months in preaching and listening. For, in truth, you do not miss anything. It is a mistake to think that 'Guru' means a mere person, or a mortal being. The term really denotes a principle, an activating principle, a sublimating force, that is ever present, ever conscious, ever luminous, and ever protecting. Once you grasp it in that light, which is the only correct thing for you to do, you cannot possibly miss your Guru, when His mortal form transforms. The means to happiness Ordinarily speaking, we say that we are happy when we get the thing we are longing for. At the time when we desire something, our mind is in a state of unrest; but when we get that thing, the state of unrest is replaced by a sense of peace.Similarly, we say we are happy when we get rid of a thing, which we loathed. At the time when we loathe something, out mind is restless; but when we get rid of that thing, our mind becomes calm. Therefore, happiness follows when a preceding state of unrest is ended.Happiness is identical with the feeling of rest or peace. Only he who knows mental peace experiences true happiness. And to still the mind (i.e., remove all thoughts) is the aim of all spiritual practices. All Dieties are none but the Guru "Gururbrahma Gururvishnur-Gururdevo Mahesvarah; Gurussakshaath Param Brahma tasmai Srigurave Namaha".Our very conception of a Guru is that He is verily the Absolute Brahman Itself and necessarily includes all Its limitations and manifestations. There is therefore no contradiction in having the form of the Guru before you when you are reciting the Dhyana sloka or repeating the Mantra of any particular Deity, for even that Deity is included and inherent in the Guru. The Practical path to Peace If a cook wants to serve a tasty dish to another, he has to know what things and how much of each thing go into its composition and how they have to be prepared and mixed and in what proportion and so on. The person who is only asked to relish it need not have that knowledge. So leave the dialectics of our philosophy to the learned among us for they have to prepare the dish for others. You may confine yourself to the practical enjoyment of the peace and joy of the Self. Strive now for spiritual upliftment! If you honestly believe in the law of karma and honestly believe that pain and pleasure are both the result of antecedent karma, and if you do actually get one of them, namely pain, without the least attempt or intention on your part to get it, why do you long for and work for the other, pleasure alone? Will it not come of its own accord if you have merited it by your past karma and will it ever come to you in spite of your most earnest efforts now, if you have not merited it already? Why do you waste your time and energy in this futile endeavor? Spend them in accumulating the store of virtue to enable you to lead a higher and better life in other regions or in future births or, better still, spend them in trying to eliminate birth altogether, for, if you happen to take birth again, I feel sure that you will not find then even the few facilities which you now have for spiritual upliftment."
