Guest guest
Dear Alan and everyone, Just before Swami Rama Tirth had his "enlightenment" experience, he became despondent and desperate for realization. Not unlike the Buddha and others, he felt like he had failed. He decided to end his life. At that time he was somewhere in the Himalayas near Ganga Ma. He could not swim and he decided to throw himself into the cold rushing waters and end his life. When he did so he was carried downstream; but soon the river threw him up onto a rock and as soon as that happened, while lying on his back on the rock, he received the experience/condition that he had been seeking But not too many years later, as Alan wrote, Ganga Ma granted his wish and he passed out of this life by "accidentally" drowning in the river. My experience and observation has been that sadhus need a desperate desire for truth. This was a characteristic of many of the greatest sages. To me it doesn't so much matter what technique one uses for sadhana; but what matters most is the strong desire for liberation. If that isn't there, then no matter what one tries to do, one will not likely succeed. michael P.S. Swami Rama Tirtha gave the most convincing lecture on the immortality of our inner nature that I have ever read. The lecture that I read was transcribed live during a lecture that I believe he gave in San Fransisco around 1905. I have the book stored away and if I ever find it, perhaps I'll post it little by little. --- Alan Jacobs <alanadamsjacobs wrote: > From Songs of Enlightenment > > By Swami Rama Tirtha > > No 11 in the Translation by .A.J.Alston entitled > "Yoga And The Supreme Bliss" > > Note .Rama Tirtha was an acknowledged Jnani ,he is > referred to in Talks .He followed Vivekananda > to the USA at the turn of the 20th C. and gave talks > in the USA .There is a collection called IN > the Woods of God Realisation .He was hailed as a > mathematical genius. He drowned in the Ganges > while still in his thirties . > Few people know that he was Papaji's uncle .The > Swami married Papaji's Father's Sister . > > KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT THOU ART THYSELF GOD, > THE SUPREME SELF, THE EYE OF THE EYE, > WHICH THE EYE CANNOT SEE > THOU ART THE ESSENCE OF SPEECH, > WHICH SPEECH CANNOT EXPRESS > THOU ART THE HEARER OF HEARING, > WHICH THE EAR CANNOT HEAR. > THOU ART THE LIFE OF LIFE, > WHO NEEDEST NOT THE LIFE-FORCE TO LIVE. > RECOGNIZE THAT THOU ARET THE LIGHT OF THE MIND, > WHICH THE MIND CANNOT KNOW . > > ______________________ > BT Broadband - Free modem offer, sign up > online today and save £80 http://bt..co.uk >

Guest guest
Dear Venkat, I can't remember the title of the book. I'll know it when I find it because it is the only book that I have about Swami Rama Tirtha. It will be a long time before I am able to get it because it is in storage far away from where I am now. michael --- S Venkatraman <svenkat52 wrote: > Dear Michael, > > Michael Bowes <rmichaelbowes wrote: > > P.S.
