Meditate always on the Truth which is without a second;but never (seek to)apply the teaching of non-duality to actions in the worldly life; my son, meditate on this Truth as covering all the universe; but never do so in respect of the Guru. I have had difficulty fully comprehending this verse. In both translations the instruction is quite emphatic. I shall be grateful for clarification from any of the readers please. Guest guest
Dear Anu , I am glad you have raised this .I have pondered on how to interpret this verse correctly .Strange as it may seem inspite of the large numbers of commentaries on the 40 and the 30 , the Supplement is neglected .The only one I can trace is by Prof. Mahadevan in a book called Ramana Maharshi and the Philosophy of Existence .I have unfortunately lost my copy .I believe it is still available from the Ashram . What I feel it is saying is that keep Advaita in the background of your life -practice inwardly atma vichara and surrender etc .but outwardly be a good Karma Yogi and play your part appropriately according to the best standards of the Dharma in your environment ..Acting Advaita -by speaking a kind of language like "this body has to answer the door' etc. known in the West as the 'Advaita Shuffle' sounds absurd .Acting Advaita towards the Guru could be interpreted as 'craziness' .One has to treat the Guru with the utmost respect by conventional standards .I don't know if I've got it right and would welcome other contributions from members . All love , in His Grace, Alan --- anupadayachi <anupadayachi wrote: > --- In RamanaMaharshi, Alan Jacobs > <alanadamsjacobs> wrote: > > > > > Supplement to > > > > > > TRUTH REVEALED or SAD-VIDYA (Cont'd) > > > > > > > > > 39. Guest guest
om namo bhagavate sri ramanaya Dear Anu, Talk 458: 'Sri Bhagavan said that non-dual idea is advised but not advaita in action. How will one learn advaita if one does not find a master and receive instructions? Is there not duality then? That is the meaning.' Regards, Miles > In REVELATIONa translation of this verse by K Lakshman Sarma > reads as follows: > > 85. Guest guest
Namaste, Bhavaadvaitam sada kuryaat, kriyaadvaitam na karhichit | Advaitam trishulokeshu, na advaitam Gurunaa saha || I feel that this instruction is predominantly for the sadhaka than a siddha to help him to stay firmly in Self abidance, in Sahaja state and concerns his external behaviour. While strongly rooted in advaita chintana and the resultant conviction developed, it has to be confined to the bhava and not practically implemented in the worldly activities (vyavahara). A king cannot ask an ordinary unqualified subject to sit on the throne and rule the kingdom considering that both are not different from Self. If that happens, the administrative machinery will be in chaos. Person A is carrying huge sum of money and precious jewels with him and comes across person B who asks for all the money and jewels telling a lie that he is in deep trouble due to some catastrophe. A has vairagya, he is not attached to the money or jewels he is carrying and he also knows B is a liar and pretender. It would be immature on the part of A if he gives away all the money and jewels reasoning that he is not attached to any of these and inspite of his knowledge of B being a liar, it hardly matters to him if he retains or gives away the money and jewels. He has not seen if B deserves that. Even so, an advanced sadhaka becoming an instrument to dispense Grace cannot go around blessing all and sundry in equal measure without seeing if it befits the blessed ones. A short tempered or restless minded one can lose all the grace in a trice whereas one of a devoted, equanimous disposition can utilize it to further his quest for Self. In this world we see things valued at various gradations, people of varied thinking, understanding, learning, talent, fitness, etc. While dealing appropriately with all these transactions in life, one has to stay put in the conviction of undifferentiated consciousness, the Self, the substratum of all the apparent differentiation and partiality, in this world and what is described as the world hereafter. Surrender to Guru and abiding by his instructions are indispensible even to go beyond the limitations of Guru-disciple relationship. While following the path laid down by Guru we are bestowed first with the conviction of nature of Self and awareness of ignorance, developing further into removal of ignorance and finally leading to the realisation of Self. At no point of time should the Guru and his words be forgotten. As Guru determines the right path to lead us to Advaita, resolving God, Guru and self into One, tradition ordains that Guru be revered all along. Hence the Guru Parampara Stotra. It is obvious that once in Advaita, Guru comes into picture only when one has to think, speak or act. Moreover, Guru-be it a body or a hill- is the focus of attention to take one back to Advaita.
