Guest guest
P.S. I mistyped the name of the book. It's Tripura Rahasya. At least two translations are in print. One of them is by Swami Sri Ramananda Saraswathi, the man who compiled "Talks With Sri Ramana Maharshi." The Saraswathi edition is reviewed by Georg Feuerstein, a yoga scholar, on this web page: http://www.yrec.info/contentid-150.html Georg gives a generally favorable review but he thinks the prose is inelegant. I'm not sure what he means by this, but the main point I would make about the prose is that it's clear and easy to read. - "Rob Sacks" <editor <RamanaMaharshi> Thursday, May 27, 2004 1:49 AM Re: [RamanaMaharshi] Re: Ancient self-enquiry > Dear Sri Murthy, > > > reading the quotes (given here by Sri. Guest guest
There is a preparatory process as a prelude to Self enquiry. This process makes one fit for Self enquiry - the aim or the goal. The step by step process will help in steadying one's mind to stay focussed for long and with great intensity - to carry out the 'how to do' of self enquiry. 'A half truth won for ourselves is worth more than a whole truth learned from others.' Towards this, I would strongly recommend 'Vivekachudamani' of Adi Shankaracharya with commentary by His Holiness Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Swaminah of Sringeri. The english translation of this great work has been published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kulapati Munshi Marg, Mumbai 400 007, and is available in all leading book stores across India. In Bhagavan's Grace, Nagaraja manof678 <manof678 > wrote: Dear All:reading the quotes (given here by Sri. Bhagavan.the phrase "Self Enquiry" ("athma vichara") could be understood in two ways I think: a) that one should enquire about the SELF (in other words "the goal" or the "aim" (or 'what' one should go after in preference to other pursuits) aspect) or b) the process (the 'how' part of it) by which the "SELF" should be enquired into...I think whereas all the upanishadic texts (please re-read the quotes given by Sri. Rob Sacks) and the 'baashyams' (interpretations) done later by several saints and self-realized ones concentrated on a) (that is stressing the importance of "what" and "why" of SELF ENQUIRY) they did not elaborate a clear-cut, simple process for it (or the 'how' of it),except Sri. Bhagavan who clearly said:isolate and stick to your "individual 'I' thought" by inquiring where each of your other thoughts come from (or who is it that is getting those thoughts) thereby excluding all your 2nd and 3rd person thoughts and that "single 'I' thought" (just by dying (or vanishing) itself) will leave you alone with that ONE Source ...thanks and love to all, Murthy--- In RamanaMaharshi, "Rob Sacks" <editor@r...> wrote:> Here's another quotation from the Brhadaranyaka> Upanishad:> > .
