Dear Wai and Alan,

These are said to be three groups of vasanas or pre-dispositions.

1) aparAdha - fault

brought about by self-pride and diffidence in the teaching of the Guru, there is

misunderstanding, such as 'there is no reality transcending the world; even if

there were, it cannot be known; if one caims to know it, it is an illusion of

the mind; for how can knowledge make a person free from misery or help his

emancipation?'

Placing one's faith in the Guru and the Sastras is said to be the solution.

2) karma - action

for the victim of past actions the mind becomes bogged down with

predispositions, subtle truths become lost.

Grace is the solution.

3) kAma - desire

Said to be the most common group, this refers to victims of desire always

obssessed with the desire to work for this or that end. This sets in motion

desires too numerous to count, like waves in the ocean.

This must gradually be dealt with by dispassion, discrimination, worship, study,

learning from the wise, investigation into Self...

(cf. Tripura Rahasya, chapter 19)

Regards,

Miles

In Vivekachudamani Sri Adi Shankaracharya lists the threefold desires or vasanas as:

1. Loka vasana

2. Deha vasana

3. Shastra vasana

Lokaanuvartanam tyaktvaa tyaktvaa dehaanuvartanam |

shaastraanuvartanam tyaktvaa swaadyaasaapanayam kuru ||

Loka-anuvartana (to follow worldly ways) - the desire to follow the ways of

world, to engage in such activities that pleases and impresses the world,

pursuring worldly values, to be recognised by the world by such activities that

bestows name and fame, etc.

Deha - anuvartana (to pamper the body) - to care too much for the body, acceding

to sensual desires, indulgence, etc.

Shastra - anuvartana - to blindly follow the scriptures without understanding

their purport, to indulge in polemics about scriptures, to engage endlessly in

study and acquisition of knowledge of such scriptures that do not help in

leading one to Self-enquiry.

These threefold desires are said to form the core of one's vasanas.

We are instructed to carry out 'swa-adhyasa-apanaya', to uproot self imposed

superimposition or break the identity with the world, body and scriptural

knowledge through Self enquiry. By turning away from the threefold desires,

the desire or love for Self, which is Self itself, surfaces, as it were.

While abiding in one's nature, the force of threefold desires are diminished and

when the threefold desires are finally extinct, firm Self Abidance reigns.

In Bhagavan's Grace,

Nagaraja

Dear All:

Shri Sadhu Om Swamigal goes one step further from the "vaasanaa-

thryaas" (three vasanas), namely , > 1. Loka vasana > 2. Deha vasana

> 3. Shastra vasana

He says ("Chapter 6 - Saasthra Vaasanai" in Tamil "Sri. Ramana Vazhi -

4th vol.") that out of the three: LOka Vaasanai, Dega Vaasanai and

Saasthra Vaasanai, the last Saasthra Vaasanai is the worst.

How?

He says man's desires can be classified into three:

a. uRavaasai (Desire for relationships) (comes from Dehavaasanaa)

b. poruLaasai (Desire for possessions) (from Lokavaasanaa) &

c. pugazhaasai (Desire for fame and name) (from saasthra vaasanaa)

a. will include all relationships starting with spouse, parents,

children, relatives, friends, pets etc. and other immoral

relationships also..

b. will be wealth, house, property, gold, jewelry etc. etc.

and c. starts as a 'simple need to learn' and 'simple need for

recognition' but grows so big in no time as a "thirst or longing for

fame/name/praises" etc.

He further says a. and b. will one day or other get tamed or subdued

over time.

one may get tired of relationships over time or may become sick and

that might result in a distaste or indifference towards them.

Bill Gates won't be interested certainly in making another 10, 20

millions or even more.

But Shri. Swamigal says, pugazhaasai, which is thirst for fame gets

more and more as one obtains more of it and also has the power to

veil all weaknesses one may have; add to this the longevity of this

kind of desire; till the last breath of man it is likely to linger

('ah, what if I leave my 100 million to a charity, that will seal my

name in the history') and tie man for ever to samsaaraa;

Shri. Swamigal further says "that is why Shri. Bhagavaan has said

'pugazhchchiyaam vesivasam pukkaar adimai agalavidal ammaa arithu'".

(meaning 'if one has fallen for the prostitute-like fame, one is

bound to be a slave for a long time and escape is rare')

and Shri. Swamigal further emphatically says that 'one branch of

pugazhaasai is to know more and more of saasthraas and getting a

thirst to display the knowledge to others'

I was trying to post less in these forums especially due to this last

thought ( a suspision in my ego if I am posting only to display what

I have read or if I really, sincerely feel that sharing of what I

find to be good is essential)...

however it is, here... let me better get back to the 'no-posting-and-

simply-listening' mode.... :-)

love, Murthy

Dear Murthy

Thank you for sharing. And your suspicion of your ego is quite commendable, I feel.

Many posters (including myself) seem to suffer quite a bit from this kind of

pride. Fortunately though I have yet to see much of this on this listing.

Best rgds
