Guest guest
STUDY GROUP on SPIRITUAL INSTRUCTION CHAPTER 2 PRACTICE Abhyasa V7 Q. ALTHOUGH THE LORD IS ALL-PERVASIVE IT APPEARS, FROM PASSAGES LIKE "ADORNING HIM THROUGH HIS GRACE", THAT HE CAN BE KNOWN ONLY THROUGH HIS GRACE. HOW THEN CAN THE INDIVIDUAL SOUL BY ITS OWN EFFORTS ATTAIN SELF-REALIZATION IN THE ABSENCE OF THE LORD'S GRACE ? M. As the Lord denotes the Self and as Grace means the Lord's presence or revelation, there is no time when the Lord remains unknown. If the light of the sun is invisible to the owl it is only the fault of that bird and not of the sun. Similarly can the unawareness by ignorant persons of the Self which is always of the nature of awareness be other than their own fault? How can it be the fault of the Self? It is because Grace is of the very nature of the Lord that He is well-known as `the blessed Grace'. Therefore the Lord, whose nature itself is Grace, does not have to bestow His Grace. Nor is there any particular time for bestowing His Grace. -------- anu
Guest guest
Dear Lee & Alan These postings are a great boon & pleasure for me too. Re the typo in V6 : ` Wherever particular objects are known it is the Self which has known itself in the form of those objects. For what is known as knowledge or awareness is only the patency of the Self (atma sakti). The Self is the only sentient object. There is nothing apart from the Self.' (patency is in the original text print) Dictionary: patency: 1.obviousness: the obvious nature of something 2. unblocked condition: the naturally open and unblocked unobstructed state OR 1. The condition of being open, enlarged, or spread. 2. The state of being patent or evident. potency :1. effectiveness, strength capacity to produce strong physiological or chemical effects; 2 potential, potentiality, potency the inherent capacity for coming into being ----------- Personally I do not think 'patency' is an error. But 'potency' would have been acceptable too. :-) In Ramana's Grace love anu RamanaMaharshi, Alan Jacobs <alanadamsjacobs> wrote: > Dear Lee , > > Yes isn't it a wonderful scripture ? Guest guest
Dear Anu Thank you, seems to me too that the text can still be meaningful whether we use potency or patency. Guest guest
--dear anu, The Shambala edition has potency - so even the Eds. are perplexed . Patency is expansiveness and potency is power- so take your pick love, in His grace, Alan padayachi <anupadayachi wrote: Dear Lee & Alan These postings are a great boon & pleasure for me too. Guest guest
I feel the meaning of the word "POTENCY" is very important here. When the knot of the Heart is dissolved, the floodgates are open, a limitless Love, billions of times greater than anything imaginable, a Light, billions of times more radiant than anything imaginable, a gentleness, which dissolves one in humility and tears of joy, come shining, pouring out, from the Heart, dissolving everything, dissolving all imagined boundaries, dissolving one's supposed "self", expanding outward to the ends of creation. It seems that the POTENCY of the "I" in the Heart creates/expands to/becomes the whole universe and then dissolves it with each pulsing-forth. "I" in the Heart, then "AM" the whole, then "I" in the Heart, then "AM" the whole. The mind cannot imagine it. There is no experience in the world that can hold a candle to it. Ramana expressed That as an elephant coming into a small tent.
