Travelling to Ramanasramam/Arunachala/Tiruvannamalai

In 2001 and 2002 I looked at around 12 or 15 possible accomodations, hotels,

lodges and guest houses in Tiruvannamalai.

The only time reservations would be needed at the three top choices listed

below, is at deepam when they light the light on the top of the mountain.

Almost any other time, all three will have rooms available and even at busy

times at least one of the three will have rooms available.

Full moon days are the busy times.

Guest houses are a much better choice than hotels or lodges. The hotels and

lodges are not comfortable by western standards, or maybe I should say American

standards.

My first choice is the Arunachala Ramana Home.

It has very nice rooms.

You can ask for a western style toilet.

It is just a few minutes walking from Ramanasramam.

Second floor last rooms on the left side are nice.

I have forgotten the numbers, maybe rooms 10, 11 and 12.

There was no hot water tank, but even in January if you take your shower around

3 or 4 pm when the sun has been on the tank all day, the water is warm enough.

No one bothers you when you stay at the Arunachala Ramana home.

One day a monkey went up the stairs as I was going down the stairs there, but he

kept his opinions to himself and I kept my opinions to myself.

I looked at the rooms at Seshadri ashram and it is my second choice.

It is just a few minutes walking from Ramanasramam.

Ask for a room with a hot water tank and a western style toilet.

It has the advantage of being an ashram.

That also can be a disadvantage, because during a busy time if devotees of

sheshadri were to arrive and want a room,

you might have to move.

Sesha Bhavan guest home is my third choice.

Maybe a 6 or 7 minute walk to Ramasramam.

Ask for a western style toilet.

There is a room that on the door says V.I.P. room.

That is a nice room.

I was staying in that room when I discovered the awareness watching awareness method.

You can read more comments about sesha bhavan guest home, and a lot of other

helpful information for a Arunachala/Ramanasramam/Tiruvannamalai pilgramage

The map I drew up in the files section is still accurate.

"Ramanasramam neighborhood"

However, I have been told that the Ramana Supermarket has moved to across the

street from Ramasramam.

All three of the guest house choices above are on the map.

For someone going to Tiru for the first time,

printing up copies of the map and taking them with you

will make the experience much, much, much better.

Take care,

with Love,

Michael L.
