Guest guest
Dear Group, More notes from Ramanasramam. Yesterday was the January full moon. Around here, this is a big occasion for the locals to do pradakshina (spelling?) around Arunachala. They do it on the road route. There were, I hear 200,000 who made the walk this year. At times the main road that runs in front of Ramasaramam was wall to wall walkers. The road was shut off to vechicle traffic, just for the people to walk round the great hill. We saw people starting by 4PM. There were still people starting the walk at 4AM. Some people feel there is a greater spiritual focus in this area than in, say, the USA where I live. 200,000 doing pradakshina round Arunachala is a sign of the sprituality of the local community. Having born in India and growing in a small town not unlike Tiru, and later migrating to bigger cities, and then living in US for a few years, and back, etc. (in fact, this week, as Richard Clarke is in Tiru, I am in Austin, TX), I see a striking thing. Older India stressed turning inward and attaining wisdom and goodness (spirituality) and that was taken to such an extent that people started neglecting outer environment, tolerating any dirt and ill treatment etc. West focused on attending properly to outer environment with reasoned action and made tremendous progresses in material comforts, taking care of body, mind. Today, we see both movements in both places. I guess there were both movements in both places all times, but due to communication, I can listen more. Present India, is like a Yogi waking up from Tapas (meditation), to find he has not bathed or shaved in 10 years and trying to clean himself and buying new clothes. Just my impressions, Ravi
