I had planned to go to Arunachala for 3 days after my work in the jungle was finished. Then, after I returned from the jungle to Bangalore, various circumstances arose and it was no longer possible to go to Tamil Nadu without feeling I was letting others down badly. 10.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:blue"> 10.0pt;font-family:Verdana;color:blue">This was very intense for me. It was good to see how much I, my ego, wanted to be a ‘good devotee’ and that this was itself an obstruction. And also to see that there was mainly acceptance and peace and a strong sense of Him anyway. Bhagavan was in my awareness so much of my time and I was reading about Him and also from some of His writings. Still there is at times a strong longing to make that journey as soon possible. A few notes on the last days there. Thursday my morning meditation was very 'noisy' with thoughts about the visit and the upcoming return. After breakfast we went again to Virupaksha Cave and Skandanasramam. In both places, mind was still and meditation was deep. I asked Nome about this later in the day. He has reminded us to look, during this trip, at our meditation and see what makes it different. He asks us to notice that it is not the place, but rather our internal approach to the meditation that makes the difference. For example, in visiting a holy place, one's mind takes on a more holy approach. This helps meditation. In today's meditation in the cave, he pointed out that before meditation, I had formed the clear intent to meditate, then going though some real effort to get to where I was to meditate. Then after the intent, the preparation and the effort, I had good meditation. I am reminded that travel is not needed to have intent and preparation prior to meditation. Friday afternoon we left to make the long trip back to the US. Before we left, there was a special event for Nome. There was arranged a reading of the Tamil Ribhu Gita, with English copies provided so that we could read along. They did this reading because of the English translation that Nome had done (along with Dr. Ramamoorthy) that is titled, "Song of Ribhu." As I look back on the trip, I feel deep joy at the visit. I feel that Ramanasramam and Tiruvannamalai have a special place in my heart, and that Arunachala is somehow a part of my Being. When we left, it was like leaving home. We are talking now about how to save for another trip next year. I know that for this practice, the place does not matter. But the spiritual atmosphere, the warm and spiritually focused people, and the sites that I feel are holy due to the connection with Ramana make this place very conducive to practice. Another thing that made it a good trip for us is that we took a library of CD recordings of Nome's satsangs at SAT. In the afternoons we would listen to these. This certainly contributed to the spiritual focus. The rest of the group will be at Ramanasramam for another week. We had to return earlier due to work needs. We will keep meditating and keep listing to CDs of Nome's satsangs. Thank you for your many responses to my posting. We are all blessed by Ramana. Guest guest
All of us , at RM group, have been closely following your posts regarding your trip to Ramanashram. Thank you very much for sharing your experiances. Here I would like to quote "Talks (Talk 273) with Sri Ramana Maharshi" "Dr. Syed asked : I have been reading the Five Hymns. I find that the hymns are addressed to Arunachala by you. You are an Advaitin. How do you then address God as a seperate Being? M.: The devotee, God and the Hymns are all the Self. D.: But you are addressing God. You are specifying this Arunachala Hill as God. M.: You can identify the Self with the body. Should not the devotee identify the Self with Arunachala? D.: If Arunachala be the Self why should it be specially picked out among so many other hills? God is everywhere. Why do you specify Him as Arunachala? M.: What has attracted you from Allahabad to this place? What has attracted all these people around? D.: Sri Bhagavan. M.: How was I attracted here? By Arunachala. The power cannot be denied. Again Arunachala is within and not without. The Self is Arunachala." Guest guest
Bhagawan Ramana also says that Arunachala is within and not without. The Self is Arunachala. A deciple expressed a desire to reside near Maharshi and asked for His blessings. Maharshi said: A Higher Power is leading you. Be led by the same. D.: But I am not aware of it. Please make me aware of it. M.: The Higher Power knows what to do and how to do it. Trust it. Guest guest
Dear Dora, For me, one of the best elements of the visit was rising early, going to the roof of the guest house, and meditating (inquiring) facing Arunachala. Arunachala, I am told, has deep meaning as Consciousness. I found that meditating with Arunachala was very good for me. Back in California now, I miss the holy hill.
