Guest guest
Dear Lior, I'm sending an earlier post from our sister group, "The Deep Forty", which looks at Ramana Bhagavan's actual words. If followed carefully and slowly, it is found that they mean exactly what they say. Trusting the following is found to be of assistance, » »» »»» Om Namo Bhagavathe Sri Ramanaaya Here is the famous Verse 28 which we will read straight through: ezhumpu makaNtai ezhumidattai Niiril vizhuNta poruLkaana veen>di — muzhukutalpooR kuurNtamati yaaRpeesu muussadakkik kon>duLLee yaazhNt'aRiya veen>du maRi{pin>ampooR — RiirNtudalam} And now to show the word breaks with their matching phrases: ezhumpu makaNtai yezhumidattai Niirilezhumpum akaNtai ezhum idattai, NiirilWill arise...........ego.(and)......will arise....the place [just as] in the water vizhuNta poruLkaan>a veen>di — muzhukutalpooRvizhuNta poruL kaan>a veen>di — muzhukutal poolhaving fallen something to find.........having wished —— diving/immersing as-if kuurNtamati yaaRpeessu muussadakkik kon>d'uLLeekuurNta matiyaal peessu muussu adakkik kon>du uLLeepointed.............mind with......speak.....and breath............having controlled....Deep Inside yaazhNt'aRiya veen>du maRi aazhNtu aRiya veen>dum – aRiHaving plunged to know is necessary———Know this Now to look at the verses in greater detail: ezhumpu makaNtai yezhumidattai Niirilezhumpum akaNtai ezhum idattai, NiirilWill arise............ego.(and).......will arise....the place[just as] in the water i.e. as the ego rises, in the place of its rising.... Note that the main verb is not here, and will be found nearer the end, as is so often the case with Tamil; we'll present the Verse "as it is" in the original first, and then rearrange it for the English word order. ezhumpu makaNtai yezhumidattai Niirilezhumpum akaNtai ezhum idattai, NiirilWill arise............ego.(and).......will arise....the place [just as] in the water vizhuNta poruLkaan>a veen>di — muzhukutalpooRvizhuNta poruL kaan>a veen>di — muzhukutal poolhaving fallen something to find.........having wished —— diving/immersing as-if vizhuNta poruLkaan>a veen>di — muzhukutalpooRvizhuNta poruL kaan>a veen>di — muzhukutal poolhaving fallen something to find.........having wished —— diving/immersing as-if kuurNtamati yaaRpeessu muussadakkik kon>d'uLLeekuurNta matiyaal peessu muussu adakkik kon>du uLLeepointed.............mind with......speak.....and breath............having controlled....Deep Inside kuurNtamati yaaRpeessu muussadakkik kon>d'uLLeekuurNta matiyaal peessu muussu adakkik kon>du uLLeepointed.............mind with......speak.....and breath............having controlled....Deep Inside yaazhNt'aRiya veen>du maRi aazhNtu aRiya veen>dum – aRiHaving plunged, to know is necessary———Know this Here in the entire Verse in 'Tamilly' English: as the ego rises, in the place of its rising, [just as] in the waterSomething which fell, having wished to find; totally immersing andDiving with pointed mind, with speech and breath restrained,Deep inside [yourself] having plunged, it's necessary to know. Know this! [NB: Notice the wonderful practice hint and analogy given here by Sri Bhagavan. An inexpert diver can be quite hurt if he is untrained, and indeed all swimmers will know the pain involved when one makes a "belly flop" instead of a clean dive into the water. A trained swimmer will have all muscles aligned and aerodynamically attuned, for when jumping from the diving board, his body-form will be "kuurNta matiyaal", performed with a sharp one-pointed body—mind. The result of this is that his body enters the water, penetrating it like a hot knife through butter, he enters deep and fast, and because he is skilled and his body streamlined, there is no pain. Similarly with the vichara process, it should be a clean sharp expert dive. If difficulty or pain is experienced, then it is necessary to practice, practice, practice according to the instructions given by Sri Bhagavan Himself, and then repeatedly to make the attempt. In this way and with Ramana's Grace, the necessarily skill is acquired so that the attempt becomes effortless. Hints and practical tips on the procedure itself abound in the Ramana Literature, for those who have the eyes to see.] Now we'll see the Verse in the way in which we arrange it according to our English word structure. Rob has kindly clarified the matter for us in the section of his book: Saving the first three feet for using later, Rob commences his translation with the final foot of line: "Niiril vizhuNta poruL kaan>a veen>di muzhukutal pool..."in water which has fallen wished object to find, diving as if "kuuzhnta matiyaal peessu muussu adakki kon>du"which is with concentrated mind, speech and breath having controlled "ezhumpu makaNtai yezhum idattai.....uLLee aazhNtu aRiya veendum. aRi"[which will arise] the ego [which will arise] the place, inward having plunged, to know is necessary. Know this! Here is Rob's translation of the Verse: 28. Just as one would dive into water in order to retrieve an object which had fallen in, one should dive within oneself with concentrated mind, controlling one's speech and breath, in order to discover the place of origin of the ego as it arises. Know this. anbudan John Footnote: the following is from the essay version of Naanaar (= Naan yaar) in the Collected Works. The blue is in Tamil and the brown in English, although it can be noted that when posting to the group, a lot of colour changes are going on, so it does not always appear on the list as posted from : muttukkuLirppoor tammidaiyiR kallaik kaddikkon>du muuzhkik kadaladiyiR kidakkum muttai eppadi edukkiRaarkaLoo, appadiyee ovvoruvanum vairaakkiyattudan tannuL LazhNtu muuzhki aatmamuttai yadaiyalaam.
