Guest guest
In a puppet-show, all that the audience enjoys is the play acted by the puppet. But the puppet is in reality lifeless and incapable of action. There is a carved block of wood, and an unseen puppeteer. A man values only his individuality and his soul, or personality. But Bhagavan says this is imaginary - there is a spirit, the Self, which is devoid of notions of individuality. And a totally inert lump of matter. Nothing else. This has of course been known in the west for centuries, but largely forgotten. How many legends are there of the snaring of the ego? I can think of at least seven without effort: 1. Buddha ascending Mount Meru with his dog (ego), denied entrance to Nirvana, but on his insisting, the dog becomes essential to his entry. 2. Scheherazade of the 1001 tales of the Arabian Nights. Wiles of the ego, which survives by telling enchanting stories. 3. Maori legends of the Taniwha, a monster which kills villagers, but is eventually snared, cut open, and found to have swallowed all kinds of people (the guises of the reincarnating spirit). 4. Punch and Judy. Punch's conquests of his dog (animal passions), through man-made law to death (the hangman). A sucession of murders loved by children. 5. Hercules and the 9-headed Hydra. Two heads grow for every one cut off. 6. (Also Greek mythology): The gorgon Medusa, death to look at, beheaded by using a mirror. 7. Pinocchio - a puppet carved by and brought to life for the puppeteer. I suppose I could add the Resurrection of the Dead. Or memory of dead egos of past lives. Fully understood by the early Christian church, but when reincarnation became a heresy, interpreted as different people all jumping from their graves together. There must be many more, derided as pagan and misunderstood Nasrudin Find local movie times and trailers on Movies. http://au.movies.
