Guest guest
Friday chat - manuscript : Joli.: Please pardon, when you said earlier this would be a silent discussion ......... did you mean there would not be a discussion in text? I'm a little confused as to how this gathering works. Thank you. John.: If something arises or is queried, there is speech. If not not ..... Joli,: Oh, I'm sorry. Please forgive. John.: Nothing to apologise for ....... Sometimes answers to questions are found in Silence. Joli.: So true, yes, thank you. John.: But if a question or doubt or comment is in the mind, it can be aired here. Joli.: Right, very good..... the Silence is very nice. John.: Indeed. It is Sri Ramana's Grace. Right here. Right now. Murthy.: Back. Namaste everyone. Mahesh how are you, quite some time since you came. I also see some newcomers. Hello this is Murthy from Sithern California, US. Joli.: I'm sorry to ask a very beginner's question, but, since the Self is bliss, is to venture into thought / the world, little "i" a mistake ? again, please excuse this very so beginner's question, and, not sure if I should just be asking, " to whom does this thought arise?" thank you. Murthy.: Bhagavan said don't worry about the number of thoughts or the intensity of each of those thoughts....... John.: That is why Sri Bhagavan has said to enquire " To whom does this thought occur?" This traces thought back to its source - the " I ". Murthy.: ...... He also said 'don't try to control or forcefully stop thoughts'. John.: Indeed, the number of thoughts does not matter. Murthy.: Yes all he said was ' inquire for each thought who is getting this thought. John.; Indeed ....... and the hard bit is REMEMBERING to do the inquiry. Murthy.: ..... that inquiry will give an answer ' I am getting the thought ' ( whether it is a worrying thought, or a happy thought or one related to a work, all thoughts to be handled the same way.) ......... Yes, remembering to be attentive to the inquiry is the hard part. John.: Practice Practice Practice. Murthy.: So I practice simple internal ( in the mind ) chanting : Ramana Sadguru .....Ramana Sadguru ...Ramana Sadguru ... raaayanee whenever I am doing things in the daily life. John.: This strengthens the remembrance of Him. To be practicing all the time, in the midst of daily chorus work, everything and anything ......... Murthy.: ...in such a practice, one is likely to think ' Oh by chanting like this to the exclusion of other thoughts, am I becoming inefficient in carrying out my daily task? I do think like this sometimes. John.: One may think thus, but it does not impede work. Murthy.: ..... then the answer comes from inside ' other than the planning time and actual doing time, 85 to 90% of the time is merely wasted in worrying about something or feeling proud or excited about something. John.: That is normal, more and more, the 'vichara' can and will, "kick in". Murthy.: So this answer has to come from inside for everyone; then they will feel the 'need' for chanting or practicing Self-enquiry constantly. John.: indeed, it is thus .... Murthy.: Anyway, above is a summary of how I feel / practice, please share your thoughts if you can. Joly.: Thank you very much for your very kind teaching. It would seem that to be in isolation would be the ideal place - to inquire of each thought - but, as I understand it, it is actually encouraged to be with people ... not in a cave, so to speak. Murthy.: that is what Bhagavan has said. Joli.: Well sometimes I feel like " the evil ego / world / little 'i' "thought", every thought is one step from Self, a dilution of self. Then, I think, this is all Self. But, then, the answer I hear is that the number of thoughts is not a problem, just remember to inquire. ........ so then I think isolation, a cave, is the best place for that.... but then remind that Sri Ramana Maharshi seemed to encourages to be around people ...... not to isolate. John.: To inquire, and to REMEMBER to inquire, is indeed The Way. Following thought strengthens the ego; and tracing it back to "Who" is inquiring, weakens it. Murthy.: It is not to say cave is not suitable at all for ANYONE. John.: Indeed, it depends on individual circumstances. Gabriel.: Yes. Murthy.: I think the point was ' if your inclination is to be in isolation let it be so, but don't think by being in isolation your progress will be faster. John.: Each must do what is best. However, getting the notion that " a cave is better " is often, but not always, false. Gabriel.: the cave can mean even more thoughts. John.: It can indeed, tangai ....! Murthy.: .....in fact many of us common folks feel that way ..... when I am left alone in the house, I look around for things to do. John.: ...it can be MUCH easier amidst daily activity. Murthy.: .....when I am in the midst of children, I feel 'ah, will I ever be left alone'? John.: ....nobody knows you're doing it. It is best that way. We should not draw attention to our practice. Murthy.: ...... mind always seeks 'something to think about or something to do' Bhagavan said ' show the calf some grass and attract it to its home '......... initially it resists and wants to graze around ..... but slowly it comes back for the grass. John.: ..... this is with respect to 'jnana' as opposed to yoga ...... the tender grass way gets to be delightful. ( Mr. Miles has just joined the chat-room ) John.: Miles, the discussion has been ...... 'Vichara' is easier amidst activity of life than in a cave. Joli.: ..... thank you for the focus to practice inquiry ..... and the reminder to do it in humility and that inquiry may not be any easier in isolation ......... thank you all for your kind focus. Murthy.: .... glad Bhagavan put us here in this gathering. John, thanks to you I got the book from Ramana Kendra Chennai.....the one on AAM by Shri Ananthaswamy. ( For a short time the discussion was on that book ) ................. ........... Murthy.: Bhagavan translated one verse from 'aruNaachala mahaatyam' which is by Lord Siva. ...... it says ' for those who take to vichara within 30miles of 'aruNaachalaa', there is no need for formal initiation. ......they will attain 'saayujjivam' or liberation ......no wonder, you(john) feel Thiruvannamalai your home. John.: Arunachala is everywhere. * Miles.: Yes Upanisads say that: He is far, He is near ........ for those who look for Him outside He is far John.: Indeed Miles.... * Miles.: .........for those who know He is inside in the Heart, He is so near, they don't even need their senses to know Him. ( * I'm not very sure ..... whether this statement was made by Miles or Murthy ......sorry ) John.: Yes Miles.: Indeed Murthy.: Gabriele, how is your sadhana ( chanting?) going ? Gabriele.: 'Sadhana' is very fine, thank you. Murthy.: See, I don't go to the groups these days other than to 'Sage..' to upload AAM file, so this is the only place I get to have some sathsang....... and I am so thankful to Bhagavan for this opportunity. John.: Your posts are much enjoyed here, Murthy. Murthy.: Bhagavan's 'kripa'. ( ..... after little gap ) Gabriele.: Here it is 'Good Friday' - the 'mahasamadhi' day of Bhagavan Jesus. .......... the anguish of death was with Jesus on His final day - the anguish of death was for Bhagavan Ramana the entrance to his final State. ........ in the begining..... it is told from both that it was very strong..... Bhagavan did not suffer this anymore when it came for him to die ... He was eternally free from it. ......but not yet Jesus. ......... how is this to be understood? ....... it just came to mind - perhaps it is not important at all - I don't know. Dora.: We do understand your feelings ...... its very emotional... Gabriele.: Yes, ofcourse it is much touching. The story of Jesus end is !! much touching. He died horribly. Dora.: Not for Him ..... its from the view point of onlookers. Miles.: both Jesus and Bhagavan suffered physically albeit Jesus suffered tremandeous violence. Gabriele.: Yes Miles.: From such violence only compassion remained. Gagriele.: Yes-Compassion. Miles.: But these events are only from the point of view of the observer. Dora.: Yes thats true. Miles.: It is this observer that both Jesus and Ramana would have us attend to The lives of the great Sages are there to inspire ..... not copy. ....... but rather inspire. Both Jesus and Ramana are eternally free. .......but so are we all Gabriele.: Yes Dora.: They set an example that pain & suffering doesn't affect the Self. Miles.: the appearance of difference is just that .....'appearance' indeed. Suffering is a poerful tool ...... this inspired the Buddha too. Dora.: Yes, indeed Miles.: But ultimately, as you say Dora, they show that the Self can neither be welted nor cut nor burnt nor killed. Gabriele.: this is the meaning of Easter. Dora.: Yes Miles.: Indeed. Bhagavan's symbolic interpretation of easter is woderful. Miles.: I can't remember the Talk number today. Gabriele.: me also not. Yet will search it out - Bhagavan's interpretation is indeed wonderful. Miles.: If anyone has it to hand it would be a good idea to post to the Group. Gabriele.: Indeed. Miles.: It is the right time. Dora.: Yes, I read it ....... I am also searching for it. Gabriele.: Talk 396 ! Miles.: Yes that is the one - Give up this life if thou wouldst live ... .......Sorry that is paraphrase There is another smaller talk too ....give up this life..... ( Gabriele I have not properly recorded the comments of Miles he was trying to convey something important ...... can you pls correct this passage ) This is very important And in order to prepare for this and allow it any moment 'vichara' is the practice. .....then miracles can happen ...... believe you me ! If 'vichara' becomes like second nature then miracles can happen - believe you me ! Take care. End Ever Yours in Sri Bhagavan Dora India Matrimony: Find your life partner online. Guest guest
Thank you Sri Dora. I’d just like to add that initially —for well over one hour— the chat session was Silence, interspersed with short texts only. The Presence of the Master was extremely felt here. We could remember that in the days of the Old Hall especially, Silence was the norm, and when working with “Talks” it is a good idea to take frequent breaks, to ponder, and to allow what Sri Bhagavan has said —and not said!— to sink in. On behalf of all members, moderators and List Owner, I’d like to express warm appreciation to Sri Dora for working with these sessions, and bringing them to the attention of those who were not able to participate. Thank you. Om Namo Bhagavathe Sri Ramanaaya... ........Gabriele.: Talk 396 !
