This is Sri Lakshmana Sarma writing in his introductory footnote to the first benedictory verse of “Forty Verses on Existenceâ€. Last year we completed our study of the Forty, using Robert Butler's exhaustive commentary and grammar as source material. This year we are returning, to include the two monumental introductory verses, with Robert's shrewd and incisive word-by-word translation and analysis. We are also incorporating Sri Bhagavan’s kali venba version, which means in simple terms that the verses flow as one unit, with each verse having a connecting phrase which effectively ‘hooks’ the reader into the next verse. The experience of following these verses closely is breath-taking, and the verses will be posted fairly rapidly. The verses will be posted on The_Deep_Forty eGroup, and members of this list will automatically be accepted.
