Dear Members

A considerable proportion of this membership have made their journey to

Tiruvannamalai, and from time to time, questions about learning Tamil arise, and

the serious devotee will find his or her way to the facilities which available

for the study of the Tamil of Ramana Bhagavan.

What is perhaps less known is that the colloquial Tamil is also a study which

more people are wishing to pursue. When I began dipping into this subject in

the ’eighties, there was a book called “A Tamil Prose Reader†by R.E.

Asher and R. Radhakrishnan published by the Cambridge University Press. It was

out-of-print at the time, and one had to do quite a lot of searching to get hold

of a copy. The book was excellent, containing sensible articles and short

stories by reputed Tamil Authors. Each page had a series of explanatory

footnotes, and a full vocabulary was appended at the end of the book; extremely

useful for lazy people like me who hated referring to dictionaries!

The good news is that at the end of 2004, it was decided that this book should

be re-issued as a paperback, and it is now available online either directly from

The Press, or from Amazon. In the UK it costs £19.99, and it qualifies for Free

Delivery.

More good news is that a Colloquial Tamil Course is also available, written by

Ron Asher (of Edinburgh University) and E. Annamalai. This is available in as a

book, and some editions are also boxed with CD's and/or cassettes.

The enunciation on the CD's is excellent.

At one time Mr R.E. Asher was a resident of Tiruvannamalai, and he enjoyed on

many occasions the hospitality Dr Subburayan of the Rajam Nursing Home.
