Dear Ibrahim,

Ramana often equated mind with ego, saying they were one and the same.

Mind and ego are both known. Who knows them? This points in the direction

of the Self.

Not two,

Richard

[RamanaMaharshi] Mind, another question.

May I please ask a question. In the pursuit of Self-Enquiry how is

the 'mind' portrayed. Is it the same as the hidden Heart as in other

disiplines.

Ibrahim.

QUESTION: "WHAT IS THE NATURE OF THE MIND?"

Sri Ramana Maharshi: "What is called mind is a

wonderous power residing in the Self. It causes all

thoughts to arise. Apart from thoughts, there is no

such thing as mind. Therefore, thought is the nature

of mind. Apart from thought, there is no independent

entity called the world.

In deep sleep there are no thoughts, and there is no

world. In the states of waking and dream, there are

thoughts and there is a world also. Just as the spider

emits the thread (of the web) out of itself and again

withdraws it into itself, likewise the mind projects

the world out of itself and again resolves it into

itself.

When the mind comes out of the Self, the world

appears. Therefore, when the world appears (to be

real), the Self does not appear; and when the Self

appears (shines), the world does not appear. When one

persistently inquires into the nature of the mind, the

mind will end leaving the Self. What is referred to as

the Self is the Atman. The mind always exists always

only in dependence on something gross; it cannot stay

alone. It is the mind that is called the subtle body or

the soul (embodied soul or jiva)."

There is one instance when Bhagavan equated the introverted mind with

the Self. The root of all duality is in the extroverted mind, which

when destroyed will leave the residue of the Self.

Introverted mind = Self

Extroverted mind = ego + world

The following extract is from "Day by Day with Bhagavan" by Devaraja

Mudaliar:

11-1-1946 Afternoon

---

Another visitor asked Bhagavan, "What is the difference between the

mind and the Self?"

Bhagavan: "There is no difference. The mind turned inwards is the

Self; turned outwards, it becomes the ego and all the world. The

cotton made into various clothes, we call by various names. The gold

made into various ornaments, we call by various names. But all the

clothes are cotton and all the ornaments gold. The one is real, the

many are mere names and forms.

But the mind does not exist apart from the Self, i.e., it has no

independent existence. The Self exists without the mind, never the

mind without the Self."
