As we walks down a street one day, he sees a mad elephant running towards him. The Mahout was shouting that people should give way as the elephant has gone crazy. He tells himself "I am Brahman, the Elephant is Brahman" and keeps walking towards the elephant. The elephant lifts him and throws him down. With a bruised body he goes back to his Guru and complains that his preaching hasn't helped him at all. The Guru laughs at him and asks him if he heard the Mahout's warning . The disciple answered in the affirmative. The Guru asks him " Why did you not tell yourself that the Mahout is also Brahman and heed his advice?" The moral: The spiritual enquiry cannot be applied in normal transactions in the material World. Hence the body and mind have to follow certain accepted norms of behaviour and responses to survive in the World. The interesting fact of Life is that the mind is also a creation of the 'Self' and only it can sublimate the mind. When Bhagvan says it will happen according to Karma, probably it will happen if the 'Self' has designed that it happen in this life span of the body and/or mind! Hence trying to work out on the 'awareness' in private, expecting the calmness to linger on in public, and waiting for the eventual to happen, the mind has very little role in the ultimate realization. May we receive the Blessings of Bhagavan! with warm regards Sivaramakrishna ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Sir: Sri Ramakrishna also loved to relate this story. Guest guest
Ruminating further over the story: The student had identification with his body... which is obvious from the fact that he was sad upon the body being thrown by the elephant. I wonder if he had no identification with his body and saw himself as 'pure awareness/ Brahman', what would have been the impact on the elephant (the other manifestation of Brahman). Haven't we read stories of Bhagvan Ramana and some others where wild animals caused them no harm during their meditation in forests?
