Guest guest
- sampath kumar bhakti-list Sunday, August 12, 2001 9:39 PM Emperumanar Darsanam Taking care of a Srivaishnavite My doorbell rang at 2.30 p.m. in the afternoon,a day when the Sun God was at His peak and no sign of the Rain god anywhere near Chennai.Open the door and an old man ,must be in the age group of 80 plus with a bag on his shoulder enters the house and I pay my respects to him having known him.The Swamin a true Srivaishnavite, has been performing religious ceremonies like Ammavasya Tharpanam etc.He has the wonderful habit of visiting houses on important days to distribute "Saradu" for ladies and Yagnopaveedam for gents .Since we have our Aavani Avittam later in the month, he had come to our house. We offered him butter milk and he wanted to take some rest .After sometime my wife asked him as to why he should take all the trouble to walk in the scorching sun, climb the first floor, when his eye sight is very bad and added to it his hearing capacity has detriorated very badly. The the story unfolded,a story which according to me should be very common among the Srivaishnavites. In short it is like this.He has sons well settled who do not like him to be in this "profession".Over a period they do not take care for him and he has to fend for himself and finds immense satisfaction in doing this .What he said little later was startling".Even if I sit at home as they desire, I am sure they would still not care for me.I have become a liability and of no use to them at this old age ".During our recent visit to States I was discussing with NRI s on various issues and one issue on which every one was concerned but at the same time hoplessly helpless was regarding OLD AGE of their near and dear ones. They have realised the tons of money they earn can not solve the the problems associated with old age.Family ties are breaking, materialistic world engulfing them and on top of it the ADJUSTMENT problem. All these at the end of the day make them feel what is the purpose in living in this world.Compare this NRIS with the old man at Chennai. The problem remains the same except that one can be called POOR Rich old man and the other POOR old man. Every one must be wondering what has this got to do with Emperumanar Darsanam.Has OUR GREAT ACHARYA RAMANUJA SAID ANYTHING TO TAKE CARE OF A SRIVAISHNAVITE IN DISTRESS AND WHO IS IN NEED OF HELP. Let me conclude for the time being on this. Guest guest
Respected Swamin, The concluding line of my mail has not brought out what exactly I wanted to communicate.I am sorry my communication was bad.I agree instead of raising a question I could have positvely stated what Emperumanar has said .In the next mail also I have raised the same question and pl bear with me. - <Parthasarathy.Sudarsan <gmpial Tuesday, August 14, 2001 11:56 AM RE: Fw: Emperumanar Darsanam Taking care of a Srivaishnavite > Sri Raamajayam > > SrimathE GOpAla DEsika MahA DEsikAya Namaha > > Dear Sri.Sampath Kumar, > AdiyEn realize the importance of the problem you are addressing, and it is indeed something we need to act upon. Definitely following the footsteps of our Acharya, could resolve such problems. While Acharya RAmanuja has no direct messages, such as "if you see a poor old man, do this", "if you catch a thief, advise him like this" etc, he has bequeathed a greater treasure to us, in his works which should provide us the clarity of mind to act correctly on situations like what you have outlined. > > Following EmpErumaanar(or Udaiyavar or Sri RAmanujar) means we do our level best to understand his teachings(including important works like VEdartha Sangraha, Sri Bhashya....) at the divine feet of Sri Vaishnava Acharyas. This bestows us with a clarity of mind, that indeed the Vedas impart the way of life, and shows us the Tattva, Hitha, Purushaartha. With this knowledge, we would have a clarity of mind, and display great Atma Gunaas, and act wisely on every situations(both at work and home). > > Also we should get away from the mindset of asking " Has Sri RAmanuja said anything on this topic", "has Swamy Desikan condemned eating of bread", "Do Vedas say moon is made of Cheese" etc, as such questions lead us nowhere, and such thoughts(Vyakshapam) are clearly answered if we follow the teachings of a Sri Vaishnava Acharya. While the rationale of questioning has to be maintained, it should be done in a structured manner with patience. > > AdiyEn used to ask questions like these before, but as time went on, simply following the footsteps of a Sri Vaishnava Acharya, AdiyEn have better clarity of mind. > > AdiyEn Sri RAmanuja DAsan, > > Sudarsana Dasosmi > > > > sampath kumar [gmpial] > Monday, August 13, 2001 12:10 AM > > Fw: Emperumanar Darsanam Taking care of a Srivaishnavite > > > > - > sampath <gmpial kumar > bhakti-list <bhakti-list > > Sunday, August 12, 2001 9:39 PM > Emperumanar Darsanam Taking care of a Srivaishnavite > > My doorbell rang at 2.30 p.m. in the afternoon,a day when the Sun God was at His peak and no sign of the Rain god anywhere near Chennai.Open the door and an old man ,must be in the age group of 80 plus with a bag on his shoulder enters the house and I pay my respects to him having known him.The Swamin a true Srivaishnavite, has been performing religious ceremonies like Ammavasya Tharpanam etc.He has the wonderful habit of visiting houses on important days to distribute "Saradu" for ladies and Yagnopaveedam for gents .Since we have our Aavani Avittam later in the month, he had come to our house. The problem remain! > s the same except that one can be called POOR Rich old man and the other POOR old man. > > Jaya Sriman Narayana > Sri Mudaliyandan Swami shishya sampath > > > --- > Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. > Checked by AVG anti-virus system ( http://www.grisoft.com <http://www.grisoft.com> ). > Version: 6.0.263 / Virus Database: 135 - Release 6/22/01 > > Sponsor > <http://rd./M=210156.1528653.3092245.1456761/D=egroupweb/S=17050770 13:HM/A=734165/R=0/*https://www.crossings.com/mybookclub/familyfaith/bookclu bs/crs/JoinFast/c6/c6_coupon.htm/?src=015_02_gj_273_181_2124> > <http://us.adserver./l?M=210156.1528653.3092245.1456761/D=egroupmai l/S=1705077013:HM/A=734165/rand=980752078> > > > Srirangasri- > > > > Terms of Service <> . > > > --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
Hello Dear Mr.Sampath Kumar, I do not generally participate in the conversations. But do read a good number of emails. Reading your email, I find it amazing how people can complicate life. I very much agree and respect and abide by all the teachings of all the Alwars and great teachers. But, why do we have to refer to what they have said about some of these trivial things? Why do we need to search and research through what Sri Ramanuja or Sri Shankara has said about helping an aged woman / man? Is it not straight forward and simple to follow the basics of life: - Help others who are in need - Speak truth when it makes sense and when you are not harming somebody else - Do not steal .... why make it such a convoluted questioning? Does it matter what Sri Emperumanar has said about helping some other SriVishnava? I can take a bet that Sri Emperumanar or Sri Ramanuja would never have said that one should help only Sri Vaishnavas. That would bring them down to any other common man's thinking levels. They were very noble and the most broad minded. I don't think they would ever ask their followers to help ONLY SRIVAISHNAVAs. Guest guest
- sampath kumar Wednesday, August 15, 2001 8:20 PM Re: Fw: Emperumanar Darsanam Taking care of a Srivaishnavite Jaya Sriman Narayana, This is in reponse to a mail from M/sAarathy Char Let me thank you 1.Can I take it my mail. provoked you to write which otherwise you would have not done. 2.I am extremly sorry if the mail gave the impression of narrow minded ,objectionable meaning. 3.I am in full agreement with what ever you have said. 4I had clarified in my reply to sh Sudharshan that my mail did not bring out what I had in my mind, which was also circulated.. 5.I was trying to narrate few live instances where Srivaishnavites are pathetically placed.I have few more to send when I received your mail. 6.Every religion talks what you should do to your own followers. It does not mean it is exclusive nor at the cost of others. 7My experience, based on hard facts prove that all the other religions have addressed and are trying to find a solution to various social problems afflicting their community. 8When I feel sad and say that Srivaishnavites should also do more and more of community service-,pl do not construe that I am selfish nor I am questioning. the Acharyas. 9I am proud to be a Srivaishnavite and I am equally proud of my Jagathacharian Emperumanar. 10.Emperumanars life is full of compassion ,human touch and today the" Powers "- claim that he excelled and surpassed all in in his social reforms. 11.My mails were not to question Emperumanar but slowly develop to say let us spare few minutes and few paise to the needy. 12Learned Srivaishnavites are treasure and they are to be protected at all cost . 13Like charity begins at home ,I will always plead for helping the fellow Srivaishnavites .If people have the time and money pl do it for all..
