Guest guest
Dear Bhagavathas Adiyen would like to write a few articles on Thoopul (for the thoopul mandapa kaimkaryam). Let me start with the history of thoopul divya desam. Sriman Venkatanatharya: kavitharkika Kesari Vedanthacharya varyome Sannidhatham Satahruti! Thoopul Divya Desam - A brief history: -------- This divya desam is situated in the town of Kanchipuram in Tamilnadu. This temple is situated around 1/2 a mile west of ThiruAshtabhujam Divya Desam in kanchipuram. Thirumangai Azhwar has sung 2 pasurams in praise of the main deity of this temple. This divya desam has been extolled in "Brahmandapuranam". Once there was a debate between the thrimoorthis (Lord Vishnu, Siva and Brahma) whether one can perform a yagna without his wife taking part in it. Brahma wanted to show that the yagnam can be performed without one's wife and hence he started a yagnam without his wife (goddess Saraswati). Goddess Saraswati tried to hinder the yagam and hence after many futile attempts, made the whole world plunge into darkness. Lord Brahma prayed to Lord Vishnu in order to continue the yagam. Lord Vishnu appeared as a "Jyothi" on that day ( Chittira Swati ) thus bringing light to the whole world. Brahma sought the help of viswakarma and modified the yaga sala to suit his needs. The asuras also followed the devas to the yaga sala but were ignored by Brahma. Asuras were angered by Brahma's deed. They went in the disguise of brahmans and kindled Saraswati's anger further. Saraswati created a demon in the form of "Agni Bimpam (torch)" to engulf the fire of the agni homam. Immediately the "Abhatpandavan" appeared and caught the torch in order to use it for more lighting in the yagnam. Hence, the lord is known as "Deepaprakasar". In tamil this deity is called "Vilakkoli Perumal". Note: Adiyen vaguely remembers Sri. U.Ve Velukkudi Krisnhan in his upanyasam on Thirukachi divya desa vaibhavam told that Brahma had to do the yagam with a wife and hence he got his second wife for performing the yagam. Hence goddess Saraswati was angered and this triggered the rest of the event. There are three divyadesams (Thiruvegha, Thiruthanka (thoopul), Thirukachi - Hastigiri) that have their sthala puranams revolving around this Brahma's yagam.
