Hari Om. Pranams. I submit that the images of Gods and

Goddesses, holding various Ayudhams and other objects

developed over several aeons. Some of the objects were

symbols of something much more esoteric. Some

represented the psychological range of the people at

that point of time.

Brhmastra, Narayanastra and Pasupatastra are all Maha

Astras, with a greatly varied capability. They cannot

be compared to fission or fusion bombs, which once

detonated, destroy everyone and everything, including

the persons who detonated them, unless they run away

from that spot! The targeting of Brahmastra on the

other hand, is 'Anoraniyan, Mahato Mahiyan' (I hope i

got the spelling correctly), i.e. as small as an atom

or as big as the Universe!

Sri Rama used a blade of grass (with suitable mantra)

to act as an Astra against Kakasura (Jayant, the son

of Indra), when he was trying to trouble Sita Mata.

The blade of grass took the form of a Divyastra and

pursued Kakasura (it could have easily overtaken him

and killed him, but that was not the intention of Sri

Rama!), all over the worlds. Finally he had to

surrender to Sri Rama.

Thank you for initiating discussion on a very

interesting topic. Let us hope scholars will shed more

light on Lord's Ayudhas.

Hari Om Tatsat.

SrI:

NamO Narayana:

Dear Sri Vaishnavas:

AdiyEn's two cents worth interpretation.

The Lord's cache of arms [an interesting pun

Is emerging on the word "arms" - Shodasa Ayuda

And Ashta Bhuja. Swami Desikan's works will

Continue to bring out innumerous anubhavams],

firstly is to give Confidence to his devotees,

Those who care to seek refuge in him.

Secondly, It could be a plain strategy, that

Based on the "effect" the Lord wants he uses

The right weapon.

What AdiyEn believes, the most important reason

Could be, is that, Sriya:Pathi in their unending

Karunai would always look forward to correct their

Children rather than destroying and hence he uses

The "smaller" weapon to bring the erring jiva into

Order.

Sudarsanazhvar is too big to keep "going around"

For smaller instances and additionally, AdiyEn feels

That other Nithya Suris would have requested for

Lord's kaimkaryam by being one Ayudha or the other.

Hari Om. I tend to agree with Sri Anand Sampatkumar.

God is very merciful and would try all means to

correct. Even when He used the Divyastras to eliminate

the opponents, it was in a way acknowledging their

greatness, which unfortunately was turned to wrong

ends.

And He is also described as Sahasraksha (with thousand

eyes) and Sahasrapath (with thousand feet). And

Sahasra is also used as a synonym for 'infinitely

many', so we can envisage Him as Universally equipped

to right the Wrongs!
